LicenseChain - Blockchain-based Software Licensing
Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Software development · Organisation: Accenture (mit Digital Asset) · Maturity level: Concept
LicenseChain is a conceptual system for decentralized software license management using blockchain technology. The system aims to replace traditional centralized licensing systems that are vulnerable to counterfeiting and unauthorized distribution. By storing license data immutably on the blockchain, it intends to increase security and reduce software piracy.

Description
Blockchain-based software licence management makes licences counterfeit-proof and transparent — as tokens on the blockchain they exist exactly once and cannot be duplicated.
NFT software licences: software developers mint one NFT per licence; the NFT is transferred to the buyer; activation checks whether the user holds the NFT; upon uninstallation or sale, the NFT is transferred. This structurally eliminates piracy. ECJ ruling 2012 (UsedSoft vs Oracle): resale of software licences is legal in the EU — NFT licences make this simple and verifiable. Corporate advantage: complete on-chain licence inventory, BSA audit-ready, no manual SAM needed. Open-source approach: Git projects can implement licences as smart contracts.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
Software developers can issue licences as blockchain tokens that are structurally non-duplicable; corporate customers can legally resell unused licences as NFTs.
B2C — consumers perspective
End customers would benefit from increased transparency and security when purchasing software, although the direct benefit for private users is limited.
Employees perspective
IT staff would need to develop new blockchain skills to implement and maintain such systems. At the same time, administrative tasks in licence management could be reduced through automation.
Benefits
General
- Increased security through decentralized storage and cryptographic encryption of licence data.
- Reduced administrative costs through automated smart contract-based validation processes.
- Improved transparency and traceability of all licence transactions for all parties involved.
B2B — organisations
- Companies can better protect their intellectual property rights while reducing operating costs for licence management.
Employees
- IT professionals can acquire new forward-looking skills by working with blockchain technologies.
Challenges
General
- The high technical complexity of blockchain integration requires specialised development resources and expertise.
- Scalability challenges could lead to performance issues with large volumes of licence transactions.
B2B — organisations
- Companies must make significant investments in new technologies and staff training without guaranteed success.
Employees
- Staff must acquire extensive new technical knowledge, requiring time and resources for training.
Technology foundation
The system is based on a blockchain infrastructure that stores licence information as immutable records and enables automated validations via smart contracts. The decentralized architecture eliminates central points of attack and increases resilience compared to conventional database-based licensing systems.
