Reconcile Interbank Accounts Daily Automatically
Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Banking and financial services · Organisation: Associazione Bancaria Italiana, ABI Lab, about 100 Italian banks, NTT DATA, SIA, R3 · Maturity level: Production
Associazione Bancaria Italiana and ABI Lab established the Spunta Banca DLT network in production with approximately 100 Italian banks. Through this distributed ledger system, participating institutions reconcile bilateral interbank accounts automatically on a daily basis. The shared ledger replaces error-prone manual reconciliation workflows previously reliant on phone calls, emails, and spreadsheets.

Description
The Associazione Bancaria Italiana, together with ABI Lab, implemented a bank-wide DLT solution for daily reconciliation of interbank accounts. Previously, reconciling Nostro and Vostro accounts between credit institutions required extensive manual effort via phone calls, text messages and disparate spreadsheet documents. Through shared ledger management, both sides see the same booking status and can resolve discrepancies on the same day.
The system developed under the name Spunta Banca DLT modernises a procedure established for decades in the Italian banking sector. With technical support from NTT DATA, SIA and R3, a decentralised architecture based on R3 Corda Enterprise was built. By October 2020, around 100 banks reached productive use and have since fully handled daily interbank reconciliation via this infrastructure. Smart contracts automatically compare booking entries of both parties and immediately flag discrepancies after data entry. This standardisation reduced processing times from several days or weeks to same-day resolution of differences.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
The solution connects financial institutions directly via a secure consortium network and enables trusted peer-to-peer data exchange. Participating banks benefit from uniform communication standards and a significant reduction in operational risk.
Employees perspective
Payments and back office staff gain time for more demanding tasks as time-consuming manual checks are eliminated. The platform provides structured overviews of open items and simplifies communication with partner banks.

Implementation examples
Spunta Banca DLT
The traditional reconciliation of correspondent accounts was based on complex manual tasks, email exchanges and bilateral phone calls, leading to high operational costs and long resolution times.
The Associazione Bancaria Italiana and ABI Lab introduced a DLT network with which around 100 banks reconcile their interbank accounts daily.
As part of the industry initiative Spunta Banca DLT, Italian financial institutions migrated their entire account reconciliation to a consortium network. In collaboration with NTT DATA, SIA and R3, the solution was rolled out step by step until around 100 banks were operating in production by October 2020. Transactions are reconciled automatically on the same day, significantly reducing the error rate.
Elimination of information asymmetries between banks and replacement of disconnected data sets with a shared DLT ledger.
