# Reconcile Interbank Accounts Daily Automatically

> Associazione Bancaria Italiana and ABI Lab established the Spunta Banca DLT network in production with approximately 100 Italian banks. Through this distributed ledger system, participating institutions reconcile bilateral interbank accounts automatically on a daily basis. ## Description

The Associazione Bancaria Italiana, together with ABI Lab, implemented a bank-wide DLT solution for daily reconciliation of interbank accounts. Previously, reconciling Nostro and Vostro accounts between credit institutions required extensive manual effort via phone calls, text messages and disparate spreadsheet documents. Through shared ledger management, both sides see the same booking status and can resolve discrepancies on the same day.

The system developed under the name Spunta Banca DLT modernises a procedure established for decades in the Italian banking sector. With technical support from NTT DATA, SIA and R3, a decentralised architecture based on R3 Corda Enterprise was built. By October 2020, around 100 banks reached productive use and have since fully handled daily interbank reconciliation via this infrastructure. Smart contracts automatically compare booking entries of both parties and immediately flag discrepancies after data entry. This standardisation reduced processing times from several days or weeks to same-day resolution of differences.

## Benefits

- Minimisation of bilateral counterparty risks
- Reduction of IT and operational costs in the back office
- Standardised interfaces for integration with core banking systems
- Complete automation of daily interbank reconciliation
- Drastic reduction of processing times for booking discrepancies
- Increased transparency and reliability across the entire banking sector
- Elimination of monotonous spreadsheet checks and queries
- Clear dashboard for identifying open items

## Challenges

- Effort for initial integration into heterogeneous core banking landscapes
- Need for uniform governance and regulatory standards
- Complex coordination and alignment among around 100 independent institutions
- Ensuring seamless high availability during daily settlement windows
- Transition of proven workflows to digital exception handling

## Technology foundation

The network uses R3 Corda Enterprise as distributed ledger technology. Corda is particularly suitable for financial institutions as data is shared bilaterally and complies with strict regulatory requirements for data protection and transaction security.
