Blockchain-based CO2 Certificate Trading
Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Fintech · Organisation: Blockchain Reallabor · Maturity level: Pilot
The Blockchain Reallabor has developed a CO2 platform demo that enables trading of CO2 certificates via blockchain technology. The platform captures emission values of global partners and allows companies with negative or positive emissions to purchase or sell CO2 certificates. The system creates incentives for emission reduction and thereby reduces costs for CO2 certificate purchases.

Description
Blockchain-based CO2 tracking for cryptocurrency mining addresses a contradiction: blockchain technology itself has significant energy demand — Bitcoin mining consumes approximately 120-150 TWh per year (2023). Blockchain monitoring systems can immutably document the energy mix of each mining operation.
The proof-of-work mining problem: mining farms can claim to use renewable energy without proving it. Green mining certificates are prone to greenwashing because the actual energy sources are not verified. Blockchain-based mining emissions tracking systems solve this: smart meters measure the energy consumption of mining hardware; IoT sensors record electricity drawn from the grid or own generation facilities (solar, wind, hydro); this data is stored on-chain — immutable and timestamped. The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF) operates the CBECI index (Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index) as a public data source for mining energy consumption. The Blockchain Reallabor Huerth demonstrates these CO2 monitoring concepts as part of its CO2 platform demonstrators. Institutional investors increasingly demand ESG-compliant Bitcoin provenance proofs: only Bitcoin mined demonstrably with renewable electricity is suitable for ESG-compliant portfolios.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
Mining operators can issue verified green mining certificates through blockchain-secured energy tracking — a prerequisite for institutional investors with ESG requirements and increasing regulatory scrutiny.
Employees perspective
Sustainability managers and compliance officers receive an automated system to monitor emission targets. The digital platform significantly simplifies the previously complex manual management of CO2 certificates.
Benefits
General
- Blockchain technology creates trust between global partners without a central controlling authority.
- Companies are incentivised to actively reduce emissions through more transparent pricing.
- The costs of purchasing CO2 certificates are reduced through more efficient trading.
B2B — organisations
- Companies can make their supply chains climate-neutral more cost-effectively while meeting compliance requirements.
Employees
- Sustainability officers can manage emissions data and certificates automatically instead of manually.
Challenges
General
- Validation and verification of recorded emission values require trusted authorised bodies.
- Integrating various emission data sources and standards into a unified system is complex.
B2B — organisations
- Companies must digitise and standardise their existing emissions data collection.
Employees
- Employees need training in handling the new digital platform and blockchain technology.
Technology foundation
The solution uses blockchain technology for transparent and immutable documentation of CO2 emission data and certificate transactions. The decentralised structure of the blockchain enables trust to be established between global partners without a central controlling authority.
Implementation examples
CO2 platform demo of the Blockchain Reallabor
The project addresses the need for companies to achieve their climate goals cost-effectively while meeting regulatory requirements. Traditional CO2 certificate trading is often opaque and associated with high transaction costs.
The Blockchain Reallabor has developed a demo platform for CO2 certificate trading that records emission values and enables trading between companies.
The CO2 platform of the Blockchain Reallabor systematically records the emission values of all global partners and enables companies with negative or positive emissions to buy or sell CO2 certificates. The system creates incentives for emission reduction and lowers the costs of purchasing CO2 certificates. The solution is aimed at companies that want to make their supply chains climate-neutral.
The platform solves the problem of lack of transparency in CO2 certificate trading and reduces dependence on expensive intermediaries. At the same time, trust-building between global partners is supported by blockchain technology.
