# Secure and Efficient Management of Patient Data

> Hospitals and clinics manage large amounts of sensitive patient data that are vulnerable to security breaches and inefficient data sharing. BurstIQ is developing a blockchain platform that enables secure storage, sharing, and licensing of patient data in compliance with HIPAA regulations. The solution aims to increase data security and improve data exchange between different healthcare providers.

## Description

BurstIQ (Denver, Colorado) developed the LifeGraph platform for secure, patient-controlled sharing of health data on the blockchain. The core principle: patients own their health data and can use smart contracts to define in detail who may see which data for what period.

The US healthcare system has a fundamental interoperability problem: electronic health records (EHR) are trapped in silos — different hospitals, practices and labs use incompatible systems. Patients often do not carry current information in emergencies. BurstIQ solves this through blockchain-secured data sharing: LifeGraph integrates EHR data, wearable data, lab results and other health information into a unified profile. Smart contracts regulate data access: when a patient grants a new doctor access, a smart contract precisely defines which data categories, for what period, with what usage restrictions. All accesses are recorded on the blockchain — fully auditable. HIPAA compliance is ensured through the access log: in the event of a data breach, it is immediately traceable who accessed which data and when. BurstIQ was recognised by the Blockchain Council as one of the top 10 healthcare blockchain companies worldwide.

## Benefits

- Healthcare providers can reduce their operational costs through improved data interoperability while simultaneously developing new business models for data monetisation.
- Patients gain more control and transparency over their health data and can confidently decide with whom to share their information.
- Blockchain technology ensures the highest data security through encryption and decentralized storage, minimising the risk of data leaks.
- Automated and secure data exchange between healthcare providers leads to more efficient treatment processes and reduced costs.
- Transparent logging of all data accesses facilitates compliance with regulatory requirements and builds trust with patients.
- Medical staff can access complete patient information more quickly, improving treatment quality and reducing administrative tasks.

## Challenges

- Healthcare providers must invest in new technologies and training while ensuring all regulatory requirements are met.
- Integrating blockchain technology into existing healthcare systems requires significant technical expertise and financial resources.
- Complying with complex data protection regulations such as HIPAA while using innovative technologies remains an ongoing challenge.
- Healthcare workers must familiarise themselves with new technologies and adapt their workflows accordingly, which requires training effort and adjustment time.

## Technology foundation

The solution is based on permissioned blockchain technology that grants access only to authorised participants, thus meeting the strict data protection requirements in healthcare. This blockchain architecture enables patient data to be stored encrypted and immutably, while simultaneously ensuring controlled access for authorised healthcare providers.
