Recycling Alliance (Circularise)

Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Waste management and recycling · Organisation: Circularise mit Gastronomiepartnern · Maturity level: Concept

Circularise offers a blockchain-based platform for traceability of materials and products in the circular economy. The system uses digital product passports for transparent tracking of recyclable waste and packaging materials. The platform focuses on supply chain compliance and supports companies in implementing sustainable business practices.

Documentation status

Description

Circularise, founded in the Netherlands in 2016, offers blockchain-based supply chain transparency for chemicals, plastics, battery materials and metals. The system uses a public blockchain instead of private consortium blockchains — ensuring sustainability proofs cannot be double-used. Smart contracts replace manual mass balance bookkeeping in Excel spreadsheets.

Circularise enables companies along the chemical and recycling value chain to track materials and share their ecological footprint — without disclosing sensitive business data. In September 2022, Circularise conducted the first blockchain pilot for mass balance certification with ISCC and 10 companies: material suppliers Neste, Asahi Kasei, Borealis, Trinseo and Shell; brands and OEMs Arcelik, Philips Domestic Appliances and EVBox; trading companies Marubeni and Itochu. The public blockchain makes sustainability proofs systemically non-reusable. Circularise has also collaborated with SABIC on Scope 3 blockchain tracking and built a digital platform for plastic recycling monitoring in Europe with EuPC (European Plastics Converters). The system approach supports Digital Product Passports, the EU Battery Regulation and the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act.

Perspectives

B2B — organisations perspective

Chemical producers can digitally pass on mass balance credits to downstream actors via Circularise and selectively share information without revealing trade secrets. Auditors can directly access the blockchain for parts of their ISCC-Plus audits.

B2C — consumers perspective

End consumers can check via Digital Product Passports whether their products consist of certified recycled or sustainably produced materials — with blockchain-based proof of origin instead of manufacturers' self-declarations.
