Ensuring Authenticity of Premium Products

Sector: Secondary sector · Industry: Food and beverage industry · Organisation: Consorzio Parmigiano Reggiano (mit p-Chip Corporation und Kaasmerk Matec); Meat & Livestock Australia mit Stockyard · Maturity level: Concept

Blockchain-secured authenticity verification for premium foods (Wagyu beef, extra virgin olive oil, Dom Pérignon, Parmigiano Reggiano) prevents inferior imitations from being sold at premium prices. A QR code or NFC tag on the packaging verifies region of origin, certification and chain of ownership.

Documentation status

Description

Premium foods with protected designation of origin (PDO/PGI — Protected Designation of Origin/Protected Geographical Indication) are particularly prone to fraud because the price difference to imitations is enormous.

Concrete examples: Parmigiano Reggiano costs 20-25 EUR/kg; cheaper Parmesan 5 EUR/kg — the incentive for counterfeiting is enormous. The genuine Parmigiano-Reggiano consortium piloted blockchain-based casein tags on cheese wheels. Extra Virgin Olive Oil: tests regularly show that only 30-40% of oil sold as EVOO meets the standards. Blockchain solution: the producer registers the olive oil batch with GPS coordinates of the olive grove, harvest date, and pressing protocol; an independent certifier confirms on-chain; the bottle receives an NFC chip linked to the blockchain entry; the consumer verifies via smartphone. The De Beers Tracr model is directly transferable to food products.

Perspectives

B2B — organisations perspective

Companies could protect their brand from counterfeiting through blockchain-based authentication while simultaneously strengthening customer trust. The seamless documentation of the supply chain would also enable rapid traceability in the event of quality issues.

B2C — consumers perspective

Consumers of premium foods can instantly check via QR scan whether their olive oil, Wagyu beef, or Parmesan is genuine — blockchain-secured proof of origin with no possibility of forgery.

Employees perspective

Employees in production and quality assurance would need to learn and implement new digital documentation processes. Daily work would be supplemented by additional recording steps in the blockchain database.
