# Ensuring Authenticity of Premium Products

> Blockchain-secured authenticity verification for premium foods (Wagyu beef, extra virgin olive oil, Dom Pérignon, Parmigiano Reggiano) prevents inferior imitations from being sold at premium prices. A QR code or NFC tag on the packaging verifies region of origin, certification and chain of ownership.

## Description

Premium foods with protected designation of origin (PDO/PGI — Protected Designation of Origin/Protected Geographical Indication) are particularly prone to fraud because the price difference to imitations is enormous.

Concrete examples: Parmigiano Reggiano costs 20-25 EUR/kg; cheaper Parmesan 5 EUR/kg — the incentive for counterfeiting is enormous. The genuine Parmigiano-Reggiano consortium piloted blockchain-based casein tags on cheese wheels. Extra Virgin Olive Oil: tests regularly show that only 30-40% of oil sold as EVOO meets the standards. Blockchain solution: the producer registers the olive oil batch with GPS coordinates of the olive grove, harvest date, and pressing protocol; an independent certifier confirms on-chain; the bottle receives an NFC chip linked to the blockchain entry; the consumer verifies via smartphone. The De Beers Tracr model is directly transferable to food products.

## Benefits

- Companies could protect their brand integrity through blockchain-based authentication and reduce damage from counterfeiting.
- End customers could independently verify the authenticity of their premium products at any time and have greater confidence in their purchasing decisions.
- Blockchain technology could significantly hinder product counterfeiting through immutable documentation.
- Consumers would receive complete transparency about the origin and production conditions of their premium products.
- Companies could strengthen their brand values through verifiable quality evidence.
- Employees would be able to carry out more precise and traceable quality controls through digital documentation processes.

## Challenges

- Companies would need to invest in new technologies and be able to require their suppliers to participate in the blockchain system.
- Integrating blockchain systems into existing production and supply chains requires significant technical adjustments and investments.
- All parties in the supply chain would need to be engaged, which requires complex coordination.
- Employees would need comprehensive training in new digital processes and take on additional documentation tasks.

## Technology foundation

Blockchain technology enables immutable digital records to be kept across the entire supply chain of premium products. This decentralized database stores all information from production to sale transparently and tamper-proof.
