# Securing Made-to-Measure Clothing Digitally

> The German Institutes for Textile and Fiber Research (DITF) implemented a pilot project for made-to-measure production in which body measurements and cutting data are processed in a tamper-proof manner. A solution based on Ethereum with smart contracts was used to detect altered or manipulated data. The project demonstrates how digital technologies can make individual clothing production more reliable and transparent.

## Description

In customised clothing production, precise body measurements of customers are taken and passed on to production. If these data are accidentally or deliberately altered on the way to the machine, a faulty garment results. The DITF tested in a pilot project how a blockchain solution based on Ethereum reliably detects and prevents such data manipulations.

The German Institutes for Textile and Fibre Research (DITF) are one of the largest textile industry research institutes in Europe and are intensively involved in the digitalisation of textile production, among other things within the framework of the Digital Textile Micro Factory. In this context, a pilot project was realised that uses blockchain technology specifically for tamper-proof processing of body measurements and cutting data in made-to-measure production. Ethereum was chosen as the blockchain platform because smart contracts on this platform automatically ensure that stored data is immutable and any deviation can be detected immediately. The project is in the area of a pilot demonstrator designed to show how networked, digital production chains in the textile sector can gain reliability through blockchain technology. Quantitative results or concrete figures are not documented in publicly accessible sources, but the project fits into the broader DITF strategy for digitalisation, individualisation and networking of textile production.

## Benefits

- Verifiable data integrity strengthens the trust of trading partners and major customers in manufacturing quality.
- Reduction of complaints and rework costs through a more precise data basis.
- Competitive advantage through innovative, digitally secured made-to-measure production.
- Higher accuracy of fit through guaranteed unchanged use of personal body measurements.
- Increased trust in digital ordering processes for customised clothing.
- Tamper-proof storage of body measurements and cutting data prevents faulty production caused by altered data sets.
- Automatic detection of data changes by smart contracts reduces manual inspection efforts.
- Transparent traceability of all data states along the production chain creates trust among all parties involved.
- The concept can be extended to other data categories in networked textile production.
- Relief for quality assurance through automated data verification processes.
- Clear digital documentation facilitates error analysis in case of production problems.

## Challenges

- Lack of standardisation of data interfaces between different production systems complicates scaling.
- Operating and maintaining smart contracts requires specialised technical know-how, which is often not available in the textile industry.
- Integrating the blockchain solution into existing production software and CAD/CAM systems requires considerable technical effort.
- The complexity of the networked textile process chain places high demands on data quality and interfaces.
- Data protection requirements when handling personal body measurements must be carefully considered.
- Employees need training to be able to work with blockchain systems and networked digital production platforms.
- Changes in established workflows may encounter resistance.

## Technology foundation

The project relies on Ethereum as a public blockchain platform, which enables automated, rule-based processing and verification of data sets through Smart Contracts. Ethereum is suitable for this use case because Smart Contracts immutably record once stored data and make any subsequent changes to body measurements or cutting data immediately detectable. This feature is crucial in customised clothing production, as the integrity of customer data directly determines the quality and fit of the final product.
