Hyperledger Fabric Blockchain Installation for CRM Data Protection
Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: IT security · Organisation: ECOPLAN · Maturity level: Concept
ECOPLAN GmbH developed an automated installation tool for Hyperledger Fabric to secure CRM data. The project was funded with 52,047 euros by LIDIA-Hessen from September 2022 to October 2023 and published as an open-source solution on GitHub. The tool enables small and medium-sized enterprises to implement blockchain technology for CRM data protection without deep technical expertise.

Description
ECOPLAN GmbH (Frankfurt), in cooperation with LIDIA-Hessen (State Initiative Digital Infrastructures Hessen), conducted a feasibility study on using Hyperledger Fabric for tamper-proof CRM data storage. The resulting open-source project (Blockchain Installer) was published on GitHub.
CRM systems store sensitive customer data — contact details, contract histories, communication logs. Conventional CRM systems have vulnerabilities: administrators can alter or delete records without traceability; in data breaches, it is unclear which data was affected and when. Hyperledger Fabric solves this through a permissioned blockchain model: every data change is stored as a new transaction; previous data states remain accessible; access rights are controlled via the Membership Service Provider (MSP) system. GDPR-compliant through a permissioned network: unlike public blockchains, Hyperledger Fabric can restrict data to authorised nodes. The ECOPLAN project is especially relevant for the German Mittelstand, which lacks its own blockchain department: the open-source blockchain installer significantly simplifies setting up a Hyperledger Fabric instance. LIDIA-Hessen (funded by the Hessian Ministry for Digital Strategy and Development) supported the project as a pilot application.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
SMEs can set up a Hyperledger Fabric instance using the ECOPLAN open-source blockchain installer and archive their CRM data tamper-proof — GDPR-compliant, fully auditable, without dependence on external providers.
B2C — consumers perspective
End customers benefit from enhanced data protection and the assurance that their personal data is stored tamper-proof in CRM systems. The GDPR-compliant implementation strengthens consumer trust in companies' data processing.
Employees perspective
IT administrators can carry out complex blockchain installations without years of specialisation, expanding their professional opportunities. The standardised installation process reduces workload and the risk of errors when introducing new security technologies.
Benefits
General
- The open-source tool reduces implementation costs by up to 60 percent compared to commercial blockchain solutions.
- Automated installation shortens the rollout time from weeks to a few days.
- Companies achieve GDPR compliance and tamper-proof data storage without their own blockchain expertise.
B2B — organisations
- Small and medium-sized enterprises gain access to enterprise-level blockchain technology without high investment costs.
B2C — consumers
- Customers benefit from enhanced data protection and tamper-proof storage of their personal information in CRM systems.
Employees
- IT staff can implement modern security technologies without extensive blockchain training.
Challenges
General
- The limited scalability of Hyperledger Fabric without sharding mechanisms can become an issue with large data volumes.
- Acceptance of blockchain technology among small and medium-sized enterprises is still low and requires intensive awareness-raising.
B2B — organisations
- Companies may need to fundamentally revise existing CRM systems to enable blockchain integration.
Employees
- IT employees need basic knowledge of Docker and container technologies to use the tool successfully.
Technology foundation
The system uses Hyperledger Fabric as a private blockchain solution, installed via Docker containers. Hyperledger Fabric is particularly suitable for companies as it can be operated as a closed network and ensures full protection of sensitive customer data.
Implementation examples
ECOPLAN Hyperledger Fabric Installer
The company recognised the need of small and medium-sized enterprises for cost-effective blockchain solutions for CRM data protection. Existing commercial solutions were too expensive and complex for SMEs to implement.
ECOPLAN developed an automated tool for installing Hyperledger Fabric for CRM data protection. The project was funded with over 52,000 euros and released as an open-source solution.
From September 2022 to October 2023, ECOPLAN GmbH carried out a funded project to develop a Hyperledger Fabric installation tool. The project received 52,047 euros in funding from LIDIA-Hessen and was based on a previous feasibility study from 2021. The developed tool automates the installation of Hyperledger Fabric via Docker containers and was published on GitHub as an open-source project.
The tool solves the problem of the complex manual installation of Hyperledger Fabric and makes the technology accessible to companies without blockchain expertise. It also addresses the high costs of commercial blockchain implementations.
