# Blockchain for Education - Lifelong Learning Credentials

> The Fraunhofer Institute is developing a blockchain-based platform for tamper-proof digital educational credentials and certificates. The Ethereum-based solution addresses the problem of complex credential management and difficult verification of document authenticity. The pilot project is being implemented as an open solution to integrate additional partners and educational institutions.

## Description

Fraunhofer FIT (Institute for Applied Information Technology, Sankt Augustin) is researching the technical and organisational possibilities of blockchain-secured educational credentials in the Blockchain for Education project. The acatech Horizonte programme identified blockchain in education as one of the most important German technology applications.

Educational documents have several weaknesses: they can be forged; they can be lost; they are difficult to verify across borders; they are owned by the issuing institution, not the graduate. Blockchain solves all four problems: educational credentials are cryptographically signed and anchored on the blockchain — they belong to the graduate, not the school; they cannot be forged; they are instantly verifiable worldwide; they survive the closure of institutions. Fraunhofer FIT researched these possibilities within the Blockchain for Education project. The NRW state parliament documented blockchain educational certificates as a strategic pilot project for North Rhine-Westphalia. acatech (German Academy of Science and Engineering) lists blockchain-based educational credentials as one of the most important practical application examples for blockchain in Germany. EU context: EBSI Europass Digital Credentials are already operational — 80+ EU universities use the standard.

## Benefits

- Companies save time and costs in verifying applicant qualifications through immediate digital verification.
- Learners have secure access to their digital qualification credentials at any time and can easily use them when applying for jobs.
- Blockchain technology ensures absolute forgery security of digital certificates through immutable data storage.
- Administrative costs and effort are significantly reduced through automated processes.
- The decentralised structure eliminates single points of failure and increases system stability.
- Administrative staff are freed from repetitive manual verification tasks and can focus on more strategic activities.

## Challenges

- Integrating the blockchain platform into existing HR and administrative systems can be technically complex and costly.
- The scalability of the Ethereum blockchain could lead to performance issues with large-scale adoption.
- Acceptance of the new technology by traditional educational institutions requires extensive persuasion and training.
- Employees need training in handling the new blockchain-based technology, which initially means additional effort.

## Technology foundation

The platform is based on the Ethereum blockchain, which is particularly suitable for the secure storage and management of digital certificates. Smart contracts are used for archiving and managing educational credentials, ensuring immutable and traceable documentation.
