# Ethereum-based Electricity Trading Platform

> Grid+ is developing an Ethereum-based platform that enables direct electricity trading between consumers and renewable energy producers. The company plans to introduce a specialized device in Texas that automatically handles electricity buying and selling through smart contracts. This decentralized solution aims to eliminate intermediaries and provide both private consumers and photovoltaic system owners with direct access to the energy market.

## Description

STROMDAO GmbH (Offenburg) operates Corrently — a blockchain-based energy platform for decentralized electricity trading. The company is registered as an authorised energy supplier in Germany and connects green electricity producers (PV systems, wind farms) directly with end consumers in the region.

The classic energy system is centralised: electricity is generated by power plants, transported through grids and distributed by energy suppliers. Renewable energy fits poorly into this model: PV systems and wind farms are decentralised, volatile and regionally diverse. Corrently solves this with blockchain: producers register their system on the platform; consumers choose preferred producers in their region; smart contracts automatically manage the balance between feed-in and consumption and create minute-accurate billing. The Corrently book Flexibilisation of Electricity Supply 2025 describes blockchain-based decentralized trading platforms as one of the keys to the energy transition. Blockchain Welt analysed Corrently as a model for the future of decentralized supply networks. The mandatory Smart Meter Gateway from 2025 in Germany creates the infrastructure for real-time blockchain billing.

## Benefits

- New business models as platform providers for decentralized energy trading instead of traditional energy supply.
- Potential cost savings through direct energy trading without intermediaries.
- Opportunity for photovoltaic system owners to generate additional income through electricity sales.
- Elimination of intermediaries in energy trading can lead to lower costs for end consumers.
- Promotion of renewable energy use through direct financial incentives for decentralized electricity generation.
- Increased transparency and control over energy consumption and costs through blockchain technology.
- New career opportunities in the growing blockchain and smart grid industry.

## Challenges

- Regulatory uncertainties and compliance requirements for decentralized energy trading.
- Challenge of scaling pilot projects to mass market level.
- Complex integration into existing energy infrastructure and smart meter systems.
- Need for further training in blockchain technologies and new energy trading systems.

## Technology foundation

Grid+ uses the Ethereum blockchain as the technical foundation for automated electricity trading contracts between producers and consumers. The Ethereum platform is particularly suitable for this use case as it enables programmable smart contracts that can execute complex trading rules and automatic billing without human intervention.
