# Power Control Monitor (GUDE) - Blockchain-based Monitoring

> Gude Systems' Power Control Monitor devices monitor and control mission-critical IT equipment in data centers and are used in the Blockchain Reallabor for technical monitoring of IT and AV installations. The system records sensor data and switching operations in a tamper-proof manner using blockchain technology. This enables new services such as digital product passports and innovative insurance models.

## Description

Gude Systems (Bad Homburg) develops intelligent power distribution systems (Smart PDUs) for data centres. The Blockchain Reallabor Huerth (Fraunhofer FIT) integrated Gude PDUs with a blockchain interface: energy consumption data is written directly on-chain from the hardware component — immutable, timestamped, machine-readable.

Data centres face a fundamental sustainability problem: energy consumption is measurable, but reports can be adjusted retrospectively. For CSRD reports, green electricity certificates and PUE calculations (Power Usage Effectiveness), operators need immutable, trustworthy energy data. The Gude blockchain solution: Gude PDUs measure the energy consumption of each socket; data is transmitted in real time via API to the blockchain; smart contracts can trigger alarms if consumption limits are exceeded. The Blockchain Reallabor documented this use case in the demonstration centre: visitors can see live how energy measurement data is recorded on-chain. Practical relevance: EU taxonomy and CSRD require quantifiable, verifiable energy data for sustainability reporting. Blockchain-anchored PDU data is directly auditable — no manual aggregation from different sources needed.

## Benefits

- Reduced costs for compliance audits through automated, immutable documentation.
- Immutable and trustworthy documentation of operational data creates new opportunities for compliance and certification.
- Automated creation of digital product passports reduces manual documentation effort.
- Basis for innovative insurance models based on real operational data.
- Less manual logging work through automated blockchain-based data collection.

## Challenges

- Legal uncertainties regarding the recognition of blockchain-based documents in compliance procedures.
- Integration of existing monitoring infrastructure with blockchain systems requires technical expertise and investment.
- Scalability of the blockchain solution must be ensured for continuous data collection from many devices.
- Need for training in blockchain technologies and new monitoring workflows.

## Technology foundation

The system uses a permissioned blockchain technology that grants access only to authorised participants. This type of blockchain is particularly suitable for industrial applications as it offers greater control over network participants while ensuring the immutability of stored sensor data.
