GoDirect Trade - Blockchain-based Aircraft Parts Trading Platform
Sector: Secondary sector · Industry: Aerospace industry · Organisation: Honeywell Aerospace · Maturity level: Production
GoDirect Trade is a blockchain-based e-commerce platform by Honeywell Aerospace for trading new and used aircraft parts. The platform uses Hyperledger Fabric to securely document the authenticity and provenance of aircraft parts and has already processed over 8 million USD in transactions with more than 7,000 users. Through blockchain technology, manual processes are automated and transaction time is reduced from up to 10 weeks to just minutes.

Description
Honeywell Aerospace launched GoDirect Trade in December 2018 — the first blockchain-based marketplace for used aviation parts from a major OEM. The system uses blockchain (Hyperledger Fabric) to give each part an immutable digital passport: production date, maintenance history, certification status, repairs and ownership chain.
The used parts market for aviation is complex and risky: counterfeit aviation parts are a known safety issue; the FAA estimates that about 2% of all installed aviation parts are unapproved. At the same time, the market is huge: airlines and MRO operators purchase billions of dollars worth of used parts annually. GoDirect Trade solves the trust problem: every part offered on the platform has a blockchain-secured digital passport. The buyer can immediately see: where was the part produced? Which maintenance intervals were carried out? What damage and repairs occurred? Who were the previous owners? Honeywell expanded the system in 2020 to digitise component records (Aircraft Records): paper documents are scanned, digitised and blockchain-secured. The Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (formerly Hyperledger) documented Honeywell as one of its flagship case studies.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
Airlines, MRO operators and parts dealers can buy and sell aviation parts via GoDirect Trade with fully blockchain-secured documentation — greater trustworthiness, higher prices for well-documented parts, exclusion of counterfeit components.
B2C — consumers perspective
Although the platform primarily targets companies, air travellers indirectly benefit from increased safety through better traceability and authentication of aircraft parts. Improved maintenance efficiency can contribute to more stable flight schedules and lower ticket prices in the long term.
Employees perspective
Employees in purchasing, maintenance and quality management can work more efficiently through the automated platform and focus on strategic tasks instead of paperwork. Digital traceability facilitates compliance work and reduces the risk of errors in parts verification.
Benefits
General
- Blockchain technology ensures immutable documentation of the origin and authenticity of all aircraft parts.
- Transaction times are reduced from up to 10 weeks to a few minutes through automated digital processes.
- Manual processes that previously cost millions of dollars are eliminated through blockchain automation.
B2B — organisations
- Companies save significant costs by eliminating manual paperwork and can respond faster to market changes.
Employees
- Employees are freed from time-consuming manual documentation and can focus on value-adding activities.
Challenges
General
- Implementation requires technical expertise in blockchain technology and integration into existing corporate systems.
- Acceptance and trust of all market participants in the new digital platform must first be established.
B2B — organisations
- Companies must invest in new technology and training and fundamentally change their established procurement processes.
Employees
- Employees must acquire new digital skills and transition from traditional paper-based working methods.
Technology foundation
The platform is based on Hyperledger Fabric, a private blockchain technology developed specifically for enterprises. This technology is particularly suitable for trading aircraft parts as it enables immutable documentation of all transactions, quality certificates and proof of origin while providing the necessary privacy and control for companies.
Implementation examples
Honeywell GoDirect Trade Platform Launch
Honeywell wanted to digitise the traditionally fragmented and inefficient aircraft parts market while ensuring the authenticity and origin of parts through blockchain. The goal was to reduce transaction times from up to 10 weeks to a few minutes and eliminate manual processes.
Honeywell developed and launched a blockchain-based trading platform for aircraft parts with over 7,000 registered users.
Honeywell Aerospace developed GoDirect Trade as a central e-commerce platform for trading new and used aircraft parts. The platform uses Hyperledger Fabric blockchain to securely document all transactions and parts information. Since its launch at the end of 2018, more than 2,700 companies and 7,000 users have registered. The platform manages around 25,000 parts and has already processed over 8 million US dollars in transactions.
Over 8 million US dollars in transaction volume, 1 million US dollars in revenue in the first 10 weeks, reduction of transaction time from 10 weeks to a few minutes.
The platform solved the problem of lack of transparency regarding the origin of aircraft parts and eliminated time-consuming manual processes. Cost savings in the millions were achieved through automation of documentation and verification.
