## Description

Lufthansa Industry Solutions (LHIND, Norderstedt) is the IT service provider of the Lufthansa Group and develops blockchain applications for aviation and related industries. A core use case is the seamless traceability of aviation components from manufacture to their current installation location in the aircraft.

Aviation components are subject to strict EASA/FAA regulation: every safety-critical part must have an unbroken documentation chain. Traditionally, this is done on paper — stacks of certificates, test reports and Form 8130 release documents. LHIND developed blockchain systems that digitise and make this documentation immutable: from factory exit, each part receives a digital passport; quality checks are documented with cryptographic signatures from inspection personnel; every transport and installation is added as a new transaction. The Prometheus Group simultaneously published analyses on how blockchain transforms enterprise maintenance processes. The ifo Institute (Munich) studied blockchain adoption in German companies in 2023: the aviation industry is among the leading sectors, with around 15% active blockchain users. LHIND published several articles on transparency in aviation through blockchain.

## Benefits

- Simplified auditing processes through immutable documentation could reduce compliance costs.
- Immutable documentation of component life cycles could improve traceability in safety-critical applications.
- Automated compliance processes through smart contracts could reduce administrative effort.
- Increased transparency in the supply chain could strengthen trust between partners.
- Automated documentation processes could reduce manual input and minimise sources of error.

## Challenges

- High implementation costs and unclear return-on-investment forecasts complicate investment decisions.
- Integration into existing ERP systems and maintenance management systems requires significant technical effort.
- Industry-wide standardisation and interoperability between different blockchain platforms have not yet been achieved.
- New digital skills in handling blockchain technology must be developed.

## Technology foundation

Blockchain technology enables immutable documentation of component life cycles and maintenance histories in a decentralised network. This feature is especially valuable in aviation, where seamless traceability of components is crucial for safety.
