# Decentralized Blockchain Arbitration for Dispute Resolution

> JUR is a blockchain-based platform for decentralized arbitration procedures that was originally developed on Ethereum. The company switched to the VeChain blockchain in 2018 to focus more strongly on enterprise use cases. The platform aims to resolve disputes through decentralized arbitrators faster and more cost-effectively than traditional court proceedings.

## Description

Blockchain-based Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) uses smart contracts and decentralized governance mechanisms to resolve disputes faster, more cheaply, and without state courts. Frontiers in Blockchain published a systematic review in 2021 of all existing blockchain-ODR systems.

Traditional dispute resolution is expensive and slow: civil court proceedings in Germany take an average of 7 months (first instance), in the USA 1-3 years; legal fees start at thousands of euros. Many small disputes (under 5,000 EUR) are not taken to court because the cost-benefit ratio is negative. Blockchain-ODR solves this by: (1) Smart contracts as the contractual basis: both parties deposit a security; upon fulfilment of conditions, automatic payment is made. (2) Decentralized arbitration courts: in case of dispute, both parties select a pool of token holders as jurors; jurors vote anonymously; majority decides; correct jurors are rewarded, incorrect ones penalised. Kleros (Paris, Ethereum): the leading decentralized arbitration court, has handled over 1,600 cases (as of 2021). Jur: B2B smart contract platform with built-in dispute resolution. The Frontiers review analysed systems like Kleros, Jur, CodeLegit and others, identifying use cases: e-commerce, freelancer marketplaces, real estate transactions.

## Benefits

- Companies can resolve international business disputes independently of local legal systems.
- Decentralised arbitration can resolve disputes faster than traditional court proceedings.
- Blockchain technology ensures transparency and immutability of arbitration awards.
- A more cost-effective alternative to traditional legal routes makes dispute resolution accessible to more companies.
- Lawyers gain new business opportunities as blockchain arbitrators and specialised consultants.

## Challenges

- Companies must develop trust in decentralized adjudication and assess legal risks.
- The legal recognition of decentralized arbitration awards is still unclear in many jurisdictions.
- Building a trusted network of qualified arbitrators requires considerable effort.
- Lawyers must acquire technical blockchain knowledge and adapt their working methods to decentralized processes.

## Technology foundation

JUR uses VeChain blockchain technology, which is particularly suitable for enterprise applications. This blockchain enables arbitration procedures to be documented transparently and immutably, while smart contracts can automatically execute decisions.
