# Blockchain-based Recording and Verification of Training and Certifications

> Traditional paper-based documentation of training and certifications leads to tracking problems, high administrative overhead, and fraud risks when verifying qualifications. Blockchain technology enables tamper-proof digital storage and automated verification of educational degrees, training certificates, and competency records. MIT has already started pilot projects for blockchain-based diplomas to prevent manipulation and reduce time and costs for HR professionals.

## Description

Blockchain-based training certificates address a double problem: employees cannot easily prove qualifications; employers can hardly verify CV claims. Blockchain credentials solve both problems.

The traditional approach: certificates are issued on paper, stored in drawers, can be lost and are difficult to verify. Employers call education providers — time-consuming and often impossible with international certificates. Blockchain training certificates according to the W3C Verifiable Credentials standard: the education provider issues a digital certificate that is cryptographically signed and anchored on the blockchain. The employee stores it in their digital wallet. Employers scan a QR code and immediately receive verified proof. Well-known examples: MIT Media Lab issued the first blockchain-based diplomas in 2017 (Blockcerts standard); IBM Skill Academy uses digital badges; Microsoft Learn uses Verifiable Credentials. Hagel IT documents potentials for HR departments in German companies. Acciona (Spanish construction group) implemented blockchain for employee qualification certificates. EU context: Europass Digital Credentials (EBSI-based) enable cross-border qualification recognition in the EU.

## Benefits

- Companies can accelerate hiring processes through immediate qualification verification while eliminating costs for manual checks.
- The immutable storage of certificates on the blockchain eliminates the risk of document forgery and creates absolute trust in the authenticity of qualification proofs.
- Automated smart contracts significantly reduce administrative effort for certificate issuance and verification, leading to cost savings and accelerated processes.
- Decentralised storage ensures permanent access to educational certificates, regardless of the existence of the issuing institution.
- Employees receive lifelong digital access to all acquired qualifications and can independently use them for career decisions or applications.

## Challenges

- Companies must adapt their existing HR systems and train employees in using blockchain-based verification tools, which initially requires additional investment.
- Broad acceptance of blockchain-based certificates requires collaboration and recognition by educational institutions, industry associations and employers, which can result in a lengthy standardisation process.
- Integration into existing learning and HR systems requires significant technical adjustments and user training to ensure smooth implementation.
- Employees must familiarise themselves with new digital tools and may need to overcome concerns regarding data security and privacy of their personal qualification data.

## Technology foundation

This application uses blockchain as an immutable digital register in which each certificate or educational proof is stored as a digital block that cannot be altered afterwards. Smart contracts can automatically verify the validity of certificates and issue new digital proofs upon successful completion of training without manual intervention.
