KleanLoop Platform for Waste Management and Recycling
Sector: Secondary sector · Industry: Plastics industry · Organisation: Klean Industries · Maturity level: Pilot
The KleanLoop platform is a decentralized blockchain-based application originally developed for end-of-life tire recycling that is now being expanded to other waste streams. It creates transparency and efficiency across the entire recycling supply chain through real-time tracking and secure transaction processing. The MVP was in beta testing phase in Q2 2022, with planned implementation at the Boardman facility in Oregon that processes 160 metric tons of waste tires per day.

Description
Klean Industries (Canada) specialises in thermochemical conversion solutions — including pyrolysis of end-of-life tyres into high-quality raw materials. KleanLoop is the associated blockchain SaaS platform: it tracks and documents every step of the recycling cycle on the blockchain, from used tyre collection to certified secondary raw materials.
The problem with plastic and rubber recycling: companies declaring recycled content in their products have so far had little verifiable proof. Customers and regulators must rely on self-declaration. KleanLoop solves this: each batch of used tyres receives a QR code; every processing step (pre-shredding, pyrolysis, oil purification) is documented on the blockchain with a timestamp, quantity and quality parameters. The end product (pyrolysis oil, carbon black, steel) carries a blockchain-secured certificate. MVP development in partnership with Kodexe (blockchain development partner). Klean Industries engaged at the Solid Waste Association Conference, where KleanLoop was presented for end-of-life tyre solutions and generated significant interest from industry partners. EU relevance: the EU Packaging Regulation requires certain minimum recycled content from 2030; blockchain-certified recycled content proofs are valuable for compliance documentation.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
Tyre manufacturers, chemical companies and product manufacturers can use KleanLoop to provide blockchain-secured proof of the verified recycled content of their materials — a basis for EU compliance, CSRD reporting and premium positioning in the sustainable market.
B2C — consumers perspective
End consumers benefit indirectly from the increased transparency, as they can trace the origin of products made from recycled materials. The platform enables manufacturers to credibly substantiate their sustainability claims.
Employees perspective
Employees in recycling companies need to learn how to work with the digital platform and document processes accordingly. By automating many documentation tasks, they can focus more on operational optimisation and quality assurance.
Benefits
General
- The platform creates full transparency in the recycling supply chain and makes every processing step traceable.
- Automation and digitalisation reduce supply chain costs and increase efficiency.
- The tamper-proof blockchain documentation builds trust among all actors in the supply chain.
B2B — organisations
- Recycling companies can achieve higher prices for demonstrably sustainable materials and open up new business opportunities.
Employees
- Employees are relieved from time-consuming manual documentation and can focus on more value-adding activities.
Challenges
General
- Implementation requires the willingness of all supply chain actors to collaborate digitally and share data.
- High technical complexity due to integration of blockchain, AI and existing enterprise systems requires specialised expertise.
B2B — organisations
- Companies must invest in new technologies and training before they can benefit from the platform.
Employees
- Employees need training in handling blockchain technology and must adapt their working methods to the digital platform.
Technology foundation
The KleanLoop platform uses a decentralised blockchain technology as a software-as-a-service solution to transparently and tamper-proof document all transactions and material flows in the recycling supply chain. The blockchain enables all participants in the supply chain, from material suppliers to end customers, to track in real time where materials come from and how they have been processed.
Implementation examples
KleanLoop pilot at Boardman tyre recycling facility
Klean Industries wanted to improve transparency and efficiency in its own recycling facility while simultaneously developing a scalable solution for other recycling companies. Through digital documentation of all processes, higher prices can be achieved for demonstrably sustainable recycled materials.
Klean Industries is initially implementing the KleanLoop platform at its own Boardman facility in Oregon for recycling old tyres.
The Boardman facility in Oregon is the largest continuous tyre pyrolysis plant in North America, processing 160 tonnes of waste tyres daily into recycled materials. As a pilot project for the KleanLoop platform, the entire processing chain from the acceptance of old tyres to the delivery of recycled products is to be digitally documented here. The platform's MVP was in the beta testing phase in Q2 2022, after a second prototype had already been successfully completed.
The solution addresses a lack of transparency in the recycling supply chain and inefficiencies in tracking material flows. Blockchain-based documentation creates trust between suppliers, processors and customers.
