# Processing commodity trade finance and document verification decentrally

> Komgo SA has launched a blockchain platform for commodity trade finance in collaboration with international banks including Société Générale and trading houses such as Shell. The system digitises letter-of-credit issuance and the exchange of confidential KYC records across a permissioned enterprise network. By establishing tamper-resistant document management, it mitigates fraud risks such as duplicate document submission and significantly accelerates transaction cycles.

## Description

Komgo SA operates a collaborative blockchain ecosystem founded by leading banks such as BNP Paribas and Société Générale, as well as international trading companies. The system replaces lengthy paper-based processes in commodity trade finance with secure digital data flows. This provides all parties involved with a verifiable and shared data basis for complex trade transactions.

Commodity trade finance has traditionally suffered from high manual verification efforts and vulnerabilities to fraud cases such as forged bills of lading or duplicate financing requests. Komgo SA developed a platform based on a permissioned Enterprise Ethereum architecture that connects financial institutions and commodity traders in a secure consortium. The first live operation started on 20 December 2018 with two central modules for digital letters of credit and standardised KYC exchange. The solution enables cryptographic authentication of transaction documents, allowing banks to approve loans faster and with reduced risk. Digital reconciliation eliminates days-long courier times for original documents, sustainably improving the processing speed of the entire sector.
