# Blockchain for Aviation (BC4A) - Transparent Aircraft Maintenance

> BC4A is an initiative by Lufthansa Industry Solutions to explore blockchain applications in aviation for transparent documentation of aircraft maintenance. The initiative aims to store maintenance data such as serial numbers, flight hours, and repairs immutably in a decentralized database. This should make manipulations more difficult and enable seamless tracking across manufacturers, airlines, and MRO service providers.

## Description

The networking of aviation data between different organisations is a complex issue: airlines, MRO operators, OEMs (Airbus, Boeing), component manufacturers, and regulators generate millions of data points per aircraft per day. Today, this data is exchanged via proprietary EDI interfaces — expensive, inefficient, and non-interoperable.

Lufthansa Industry Solutions is developing a blockchain vision for aviation data exchange: instead of developing each data interface bilaterally, a shared blockchain infrastructure is used. Each organisation decides via smart contract which data it shares and with whom — full data sovereignty without a central data broker. Air France-KLM already evaluated the use of blockchain for MRO processes in 2017 (Aviation Today): maintenance orders, parts status, and certifications are to become decentralised. Prometheus Group published an analysis of how blockchain transforms enterprise maintenance activities: predictive maintenance algorithms can be trained on blockchain-secured historical maintenance data; the result is more reliable forecasts and fewer unplanned failures. The vision: a European aviation blockchain infrastructure where all partners have equal access conditions.

## Benefits

- Efficiency gains through digitisation of manual and paper-based maintenance documentation with reduced process costs.
- Increased transparency through immutable storage of all maintenance data in a decentralized database.
- Improved traceability of component histories across various actors such as manufacturers, airlines, and MRO service providers.
- Reduced risk by making manipulation of critical maintenance documents more difficult.
- Improved work quality through better data availability and transparent traceability of maintenance histories.

## Challenges

- High implementation complexity and integration into existing systems require significant investment in technical expertise and infrastructure.
- Knowledge gaps in blockchain technology and scalability issues for millions of devices and billions of transactions present technical challenges.
- The development of common industry standards and coordination of various stakeholders require considerable organisational effort.
- Employees must adapt to new digital processes and acquire blockchain knowledge, which entails training efforts.

## Technology foundation

The initiative explores blockchain technology for the secure and immutable storage of maintenance data in aviation. IBM is involved as a partner, with open-source frameworks such as Hyperledger being discussed as possible technical foundations.
