## Description

Lufthansa Industry Solutions has launched the BC4A initiative (Blockchain for Aviation) to use blockchain in aircraft maintenance. The core idea: components are registered in a blockchain after manufacture, including serial numbers. Maintenance technicians can access the entire maintenance history of a component at any time — across manufacturers, airlines, and MRO service providers. This eliminates manipulation risks and facilitates decisions on whether a part should be repaired or replaced.

Lufthansa Industry Solutions initiated the BC4A initiative (Blockchain for Aviation) to bring all relevant aviation industry stakeholders together: software developers, aircraft manufacturers, MRO service providers, logisticians, lessors, and civil aviation authorities. Specifically, components are to be registered in a blockchain immediately after manufacture with all relevant data — including serial numbers. If a part later fails, technicians can retrieve the exact flight hours and make data-driven decisions on whether repair or replacement is more sensible. Further planned applications include the secure management of aviation authority certifications and job cards for technicians. In February 2020, the MRO Blockchain Alliance complemented this approach — with members such as Bolloré Logistics, Cathay Pacific, FLYdocs, HAECO Group, Ramco Systems, SITA, and Willis Lease Finance Corporation. PwC estimates the savings potential for the global MRO industry at around 3.5 billion US dollars, about 5% of total costs.
