## Description

MOBI (Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative) is a consortium of 100+ companies — including BMW, Ford, GM, Renault, Bosch — developing open DLT standards for mobility. Vehicle Identity (VID) standards define decentralized digital identities for vehicles. Technology partners: IOTA, Hyperledger, ConsenSys.

MOBI creates the standardisation foundation for the Economy of Things in the mobility sector. Without uniform standards, different blockchain solutions cannot interact.

## Benefits

- Automobile manufacturers and insurers use VID standards for tamper-proof vehicle histories.
- Usage-Based Insurance is enabled by verifiable on-chain driving data.
- Used car buyers benefit from verifiable vehicle histories.
- Autonomous payments at charging stations and car parks without manual interaction.
- Open DLT standards for interoperability between different blockchain solutions in mobility.
- Vehicle Identity (VID) standards define decentralized digital identities for vehicles.
- 100+ companies in the consortium ensure broad industry acceptance.
- Developers use open MOBI standards as a basis for blockchain-based mobility applications.

## Challenges

- Automobile manufacturers must extend existing vehicle IT systems with blockchain interfaces.
- End users must build trust in decentralized vehicle identities — an acceptance hurdle for traditional drivers.
- MOBI is primarily a standardisation and consortium project with proof-of-concept implementations — not a production product.
- Fragmentation of DLT technologies (IOTA, Hyperledger, ConsenSys) complicates uniform implementation.
- Lack of specialists with expertise at the interface of automotive and distributed ledger technology.

## Technology foundation

Multi-DLT approach (IOTA, Hyperledger, Ethereum), open Vehicle Identity standards, smart contracts for autonomous M2M payments.
