# Decentralized Platform for Scientific Publications

> The traditional scientific publication process is often slow, expensive, and opaque, which is why blockchain technology is being employed for automation and decentralization. Smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain are used to automate the publication process, rewarding authors, reviewers, and contributors with tokens. This solution promises to accelerate the publication process, reduce costs, and increase transparency in scientific research.

## Description

Blockchain-based open science infrastructure makes research data immutably publicly accessible and solves the reproducibility crisis through tamper-proof timestamping of hypotheses and protocols.

The reproducibility problem: 50-70% of all published scientific studies cannot be reproduced. Common causes: (1) HARKing — hypotheses are formulated after data review as if they existed beforehand. (2) Selective reporting — only significant results are published. (3) Data falsification. Blockchain solves all three: Pre-registration on the blockchain — researchers anchor hypotheses, study design and primary endpoints on-chain before the study begins; this makes later changes detectable. Raw data IPFS hash — raw data is stored on the blockchain as an IPFS hash; any manipulation of the dataset is detectable. Open peer review on-chain — all reviewer comments and revisions are timestamped. Practical example: Frontiers in Blockchain (2021, Benchoufi/Ravaud) as the first peer-reviewed publication on blockchain-supported clinical trial registration.

## Benefits

- Research institutes can position themselves as innovation leaders in the field of open science and build new partnerships.
- Acceleration of the publication process through automated smart contract workflows.
- Significant cost reduction by eliminating traditional publishing intermediaries.
- Increased transparency and traceability of all publication and review processes.
- Scientific staff receive fair token rewards for their peer review activities and publication contributions.

## Challenges

- Companies must make significant investments in technical infrastructure and smart contract development before initial returns become visible.
- The scalability of the Ethereum blockchain can lead to bottlenecks with a large number of users and transactions.
- Acceptance of the new technology by the conservative scientific community requires extensive persuasion and training.
- Scientific staff must familiarise themselves with new blockchain-based workflows and adapt their usual publication routines.

## Technology foundation

The solution is based on the Ethereum blockchain with smart contracts that can automatically distribute payments and rewards to participants. This technology is particularly suitable for the publication process as it enables immutable records of publications and reviews while ensuring transparency of the entire process.
