Patientory - Blockchain-based Patient Data Platform
Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Care and social services · Organisation: Patientory · Maturity level: Production
Patientory has developed a blockchain-based platform that enables patients to securely manage and share their health data. The system aggregates data from over 24,000 health systems and represents 95 percent of all electronic medical records in the USA. Through a token-based reward system, patients are motivated to actively participate in their healthcare and have reached over 45,000 platform subscribers.

Description
Patientory was founded in 2015 by Chrissa McFarlane in Atlanta and quickly became one of the best-known healthcare blockchain projects. The ICO in May/June 2017 was one of the first ever for a healthcare company. The PTOY token functions as the access currency to the PTOYMatrix — Chrissa McFarlane: The first blockchain ICO in healthcare.
Patientory solves the fundamental problem of healthcare data interoperability: patient data is stored in silos — different clinics, practices, and labs have incompatible systems and no secure data exchange paths. Patient data breaches cost the US healthcare industry 10.9 billion USD annually. PTOYMatrix is a private, HIPAA-compliant blockchain network: patients create profiles with their medical history; doctors and clinics receive only the access explicitly authorised by patients; all accesses are immutably logged. The PTOY token has two functions: as a usage fee for the platform and as an investment asset. Neith Enterprise: enterprise product for clinics for population health analytics. Boomtown Health-Tech Accelerator (Boulder, 2016): Patientory was in the founding class. Partners: Kaiser Permanente (Colorado Permanente Medical Group), StartUp Health.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
Hospitals and clinics can securely share patient data with other authorised healthcare institutions via the Patientory platform — seamless patient history in seconds, no paper-based exchange, HIPAA-compliant.
B2C — consumers perspective
Patients store their entire medical history in the Patientory app and decide which doctor sees which data — medical data belongs to the patient, not the clinics.
Employees perspective
Medical staff gain better access to complete patient histories, enabling more informed treatment decisions. IT staff benefit from a standardised, HIPAA-compliant solution for data management.
Benefits
General
- The platform enhances patient engagement through token rewards and has already reached over 45,000 subscribers.
- Secure, HIPAA-compliant data management ensures the highest data protection standards in healthcare.
- Comprehensive data integration from over 24,000 health systems enables complete patient overviews.
B2B — organisations
- Healthcare providers can unlock new revenue streams of over 4 million USD through improved data interoperability and pharmaceutical collaborations.
B2C — consumers
- Patients receive token rewards for active participation in their healthcare and retain full control over their data.
Employees
- Medical staff make more informed treatment decisions through better access to complete patient data.
Challenges
General
- The high technical complexity requires comprehensive integration with existing healthcare systems.
- Scaling to a large number of participants while maintaining HIPAA compliance presents ongoing challenges.
B2B — organisations
- Healthcare providers must make significant investments to integrate with existing IT systems.
Employees
- Staff require extensive training to handle the new blockchain-based platform.
Technology foundation
Patientory uses its own private blockchain solution called PTOYMatrix Blockchain Storage Network, which is HIPAA-compliant and enables decentralised apps for storing patient data. This technology encrypts health data and distributes it decentralised, allowing patients to retain control over their data while maintaining the highest security standards in healthcare.
Implementation examples
Patientory Health Data Aggregation
The company aimed to solve the lack of patient involvement in healthcare through a secure, patient-centred data platform. The goal was to give patients control over their data while simultaneously creating new revenue streams through clinical trials.
Patientory built a blockchain-based network aggregating data from over 24,000 health systems.
Patientory successfully implemented a blockchain platform representing 95 percent of all electronic medical data in the USA. The company gained over 45,000 platform subscribers and generated more than 4 million USD from pharma clinical trial contracts. The solution uses its own PTOYMatrix Blockchain Storage Network for HIPAA-compliant data storage.
The platform solved data interoperability issues between different health systems and improved patient involvement through token incentive systems. At the same time, a HIPAA-compliant solution was created for the secure storage and exchange of sensitive health data.
