Efficient Verification of Medical Professionals

Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Hospitals and clinics · Organisation: ProCredEx · Maturity level: Pilot

ProCredEx has developed a decentralized system for verifying medical professionals' qualifications based on the R3 Corda blockchain. The system accelerates hiring processes in hospitals and clinics through secure and transparent credential verification. ProCredEx has already developed a proof-of-concept system and operates a functional decentralized application with membership model.

Description

Medical credentialing in the USA is an extremely time-consuming process: every hospital, insurer, and practice independently verifies doctor qualifications (licence, specialist title, malpractice insurance, criminal records). This takes 90-120 days and costs about 1,300 USD per check. ProCredEx solves this with a blockchain platform.

ProCredEx was founded to digitise the fragmented US credentialing system. The system: when a hospital has verified a doctor's qualifications, the results (verified by third-party sources) are documented on the blockchain. Other network members can immediately query this verified data — without conducting their own checks. This saves time and money. The network connects: hospitals, health insurers, medical staffing agencies, state medical boards (licensing authorities), and certification bodies (e.g. American Board of Medical Specialties). Verifications include: active licence without restrictions, specialist status, training certificates, malpractice insurance, hospital privileges. BGO Software and other blockchain healthcare analysts named ProCredEx one of the most promising US healthcare blockchain projects. BGO Software included ProCredEx in its healthcare blockchain case study collection.

Perspectives

B2B — organisations perspective

Hospitals and health insurers save 90% of credentialing costs and time with ProCredEx: doctor qualifications from the network are retrieved instantly instead of being manually checked over 90-120 days.

B2C — consumers perspective

Patients indirectly benefit from increased transparency and security regarding the qualifications of their treating medical professionals. The system contributes to a more trustworthy healthcare system where the qualifications of all parties involved are verified and traceable.

Employees perspective

Medical professionals benefit from a simplified application process as they only need to enter their qualifications once into the system, which can then be used by various employers. HR staff can free themselves from time-consuming manual verification processes and focus on more valuable tasks.

Technology foundation

ProCredEx uses the R3 Corda Blockchain, a so-called federated blockchain specifically developed for enterprises. Corda was chosen because it provides the necessary security and industrial scalability required for handling credibility transactions in healthcare.

Implementation examples

ProCredEx qualification verification for healthcare institutions

The traditional system for verifying medical qualifications is time-consuming, error-prone, and leads to redundant tasks for all parties involved. ProCredEx aimed to eliminate these inefficiencies through a secure, decentralised solution that speeds up the hiring process.

ProCredEx developed a proof-of-concept system and operates a functional decentralised application for qualification verification.

After a comprehensive evaluation of various blockchain technologies, ProCredEx chose the R3 Corda platform and built a decentralised system for verifying medical qualifications on it. The company already operates a functional decentralised application with a membership model, enabling medical professionals to securely store and share their qualifications. The system supports real-time data sharing, automated updates, and data migration between different platforms.

The system solves the problem of slow and error-prone manual qualification verification and reduces redundant certification tasks. It minimises administrative burdens and creates new opportunities for monetising existing qualification data.
