# ripe.io - Blockchain of Food

> ripe.io develops a blockchain-based platform for complete food traceability from producer to consumer. The solution combines IoT sensors with blockchain technology to immutably document data on ripeness, quality, and growing conditions. The company has successfully conducted pilot projects with Ward's Berry Farm and Sweetgreen, where tomatoes were fully traceable from harvest to restaurant salad.

## Description

Ripe.io was founded in San Francisco as a blockchain platform for food traceability. In 2018, the company closed a $2.4 million seed round led by Maersk Growth (the venture arm of the world’s largest container shipping group). The system documents the entire journey of food on the blockchain: from cultivation through transport to retail.

Ripe.io connects farm management software with blockchain documentation: farmers enter cultivation data (pesticides, irrigation, soil samples) directly into the platform; harvest data is anchored with GPS coordinates and timestamps; transporters and warehouse operators add cold chain and handover data. Maersk’s lead investment is strategic: as the world’s largest container shipping company, Maersk has a direct interest in seamless documentation of the millions of food containers transported annually. Ripe.io pursues a data-centric approach: the more data in the system, the more accurate quality predictions and traceability can be performed. Compared to IBM Food Trust (Walmart): IBM/Walmart focuses on large retailers and processors; Ripe.io addresses the entire agricultural data stream from smallholders to large agribusinesses. Blockchain agriculture market: according to Global Agriculture Research, the sector will grow to $7.37 billion by 2033.

## Benefits

- Companies can strengthen their market position through verifiable quality and sustainability and achieve premium prices for transparent products.
- Consumers gain complete transparency about the origin and production conditions of their food and can make more sustainable purchasing decisions.
- Immutable blockchain documentation prevents data manipulation and creates trustworthy transparency throughout the supply chain.
- IoT sensors enable automatic and continuous monitoring of quality parameters without manual intervention.
- Detailed traceability significantly accelerates food recalls, thereby reducing risks and costs.
- Employees receive precise, automatically captured data that reduces manual documentation tasks and enables better quality decisions.

## Challenges

- Companies must make significant investments in new technologies and training, while the return on investment is not yet clearly proven.
- Integrating IoT sensors with blockchain technology requires high technical expertise and complex system architectures.
- Success depends on the willingness of all supply chain actors to use standardized data formats and participate in the shared platform.
- Employees must become familiar with complex new technologies and fundamentally adapt existing workflows.

## Technology foundation

ripe.io uses blockchain technology combined with proprietary software for data collection via IoT sensors, surveys, and spreadsheets. The blockchain acts as an immutable ledger for all supply chain data, while special 'Food Bundles' create closed environments with shared ledgers for various supply chain actors.
