Smart City Repair - Blockchain-based Street Light Maintenance
Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Public infrastructure and utilities · Organisation: Stadtwerke Hilden GmbH / Böpckchain Reallabor · Maturity level: Pilot
The Blockchain Reallabor in the Rhineland Mining Area is developing a demo application for automated repair of urban infrastructure using blockchain technology and smart contracts. The solution enables citizens to report defective street lights or traffic signals via an app, with damage reports being stored immutably on a blockchain. A smart contract automatically triggers maintenance tickets and informs citizens about the processing status of their reports.

Description
Blockchain-based citizen damage reports create transparent, tamper-proof communication channels between citizens and local authorities.
The problem with traditional damage reports: citizens report by phone or form; no confirmation that the report was registered; no traceability of processing status; authorities can deny having received a report. Blockchain solution: citizens report via app with GPS, photo and description; report is anchored on-chain with a timestamp; authority receives notification; processing status is also updated on-chain. Reference: FixMyStreet (UK, MySociety): over 2 million reported damages without blockchain — the model is directly extendable with blockchain. Germany's OZG (Online Access Act): obliges authorities by 2022 (with delays) to offer all administrative services digitally — blockchain as an integrity layer.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
Local authorities can strengthen citizen trust with blockchain-supported damage reporting systems, make processing status transparent, and reduce liability risks through seamless report time-stamping.
