## Description

Starbucks Odyssey was the first major NFT loyalty experiment in the food industry. Polygon blockchain, developed with Forum3. Two currencies: tradable Journey Stamps (NFTs) + non-tradable Odyssey Points. Polygon Labs paid a $4 million partnership fee. The programme failed due to excessive complexity, poor integration into the core programme, and the general NFT market crash.

Starbucks Odyssey launched in December 2022 in closed beta as the coffee giant’s first Web3 initiative with 31.4 million active US Rewards members. Technically it ran on the Polygon blockchain; Polygon Labs paid $4 million for the exclusive partnership. Co-developer Forum3 was founded by Adam Brotman, former Chief Digital Officer of Starbucks. Participants earned Journey Stamps (NFTs) through purchases, videos and quizzes, or bought them directly. Stamps offered access to exclusive rewards: trips to Starbucks coffee farms, virtual classes, merchandise. At its peak in early 2023, some stamps fetched up to $2,000 on Nifty Gateway. Over 58,000 active participants at Level 1; the top reward (Tier 5) was a Costa Rica trip for the 20 most active users. Then came the NFT market crash: floor prices dropped 72-86% below issue price. On 15 March 2024, Starbucks announced closure by 31 March 2024. Key learning: NFT loyalty needs clear value propositions, seamless integration into the core programme, and minimal entry barriers for mainstream consumers. Too much complexity (two currencies, separate platform, quizzes and videos) without corresponding simple rewards was the main problem.

## Benefits

- Companies can position themselves as pioneers through innovative Web3 technology and reach new tech-savvy target groups.
- NFT-based loyalty programmes enable the creation of unique, tradable digital assets that go beyond traditional points systems.
- Blockchain technology offers transparency and authenticity of rewards, which can strengthen customer trust.
- Exclusive digital collectibles can foster strong community effects and increased customer engagement.
- Employees can develop new skills in forward-looking technologies and implement innovative customer relationship strategies.

## Challenges

- Implementation requires significant technical resources and partnerships with blockchain specialists, resulting in high costs.
- The high complexity of NFT systems with multiple currencies and marketplaces can overwhelm customers and lead to low adoption.
- Fluctuating NFT values and the risk of value loss can undermine customer trust and programme stability.
- Employees must learn complex new technologies and may face customer questions requiring specialised blockchain knowledge.

## Technology foundation

The programme used the Polygon blockchain, a low-cost and energy-efficient Ethereum sidechain, to create and manage NFTs. Integration with Nifty Gateway allowed users to trade their Journey Stamps without needing their own crypto wallet, lowering technical barriers for ordinary consumers.
