Proving Machine Identity Beyond Doubt

Sector: Secondary sector · Industry: Mechanical and plant engineering · Organisation: TRUMPF GmbH & Co. KG · Maturity level: Pilot

Blockchain-based machine identities give industrial machines and equipment a unique, tamper-proof digital identity on the blockchain. Machines can authenticate each other, automatically present maintenance histories and trade autonomously in machine-to-machine (M2M) transactions — the foundation for Industry 4.0 and autonomous factory processes.

Description

Machine identities on the blockchain provide industrial plants with unique digital identities for autonomous authentication and M2M transactions in Industry 4.0 environments.

In an autonomous factory, machines must communicate and make decisions — but how does a CNC machine know that the robotic arm delivering parts to it is actually authorised? Blockchain machine identity solves this: each machine receives a DID (Decentralized Identifier) on the blockchain when installed; the private key is stored in the machine's Hardware Security Module; in every M2M communication the machine authenticates itself cryptographically; maintenance history, calibration certificates and operating hours are maintained on-chain. IOTA is a protocol optimised for IoT (fee-free, DAG architecture) developed specifically for industrial M2M transactions.

Perspectives

B2B — organisations perspective

Mechanical engineers and factory operators can secure M2M communication with blockchain-secured machine identities, exclude spoofing attacks and automatically document maintenance histories.
