# TWYST-Token - CO2-conscious Blockchain Currency

> TWYST is an experimental blockchain token being developed as part of the Blockchain Real Lab by the Fraunhofer Society, funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The token aims to promote sustainable consumption behavior by allowing future exchange for vegan or other sustainable products and services. The number of TWYST.Points is limited, making the project deflationary and creating scarcity.

## Description

The Blockchain Reallabor Hürth (Fraunhofer FIT, Prof. Wolfgang Prinz) develops concepts for blockchain-based sustainability reward systems. The basic principle: consumers who act sustainably — through verified purchases of regional products, use of renewable energy, or recycling — receive tokens that can be exchanged for concrete benefits. The blockchain prevents manipulation and double allocation.

Traditional loyalty programmes are opaque and easily manipulated. Blockchain-based reward systems for sustainable consumption solve this problem: every proof of sustainability is documented on the blockchain, tokens are issued immutably and cannot be redeemed twice. The Blockchain Reallabor researches such systems as part of its mission to anchor blockchain technology in the Rhineland region. In the context of the NRW structural transformation (phasing out of lignite), blockchain-based sustainability systems are particularly relevant: they can digitise and strengthen regional economic cycles. Prof. Wolfgang Prinz identified CO₂ certificate trading, documentation of production processes, and sustainability reward systems as key use cases for the region. The concept builds on successful international examples: Plastic Bank rewards plastic waste collectors in developing countries with digital tokens.

## Benefits

- Retailers can specifically target environmentally conscious customers and retain them long-term through the token system.
- Consumers receive concrete rewards for sustainable consumption behaviour in the form of redeemable tokens.
- The token system creates financial incentives for sustainable consumption behaviour and can strengthen consumers' environmental awareness.
- The deflationary structure due to a limited number of tokens can mean value appreciation for users.
- Companies can position themselves as sustainable by participating and open up new target groups.
- Employees can develop new skills in blockchain technology and sustainability management.

## Challenges

- Retailers must invest in new technology and employee training without guaranteed returns.
- Acceptance of new token systems among consumers and retailers is uncertain and must first be built up.
- Integrating blockchain-based systems into existing retail processes requires significant technical adjustments.
- Employees must learn new, complex technologies and integrate them into their workflows.

## Technology foundation

TWYST uses blockchain technology to issue limited tokens that can later be exchanged for sustainable products. The deflationary structure due to the limited number of tokens is intended to create incentives for sustainable behaviour.
