Blockchain for Sustainable Forestry in Indonesia
Sector: Primary sector · Industry: Forestry · Organisation: Verschiedene Initiativen, einschließlich Katam · Maturity level: Concept
Blockchain-based platforms are being conceptually developed in Indonesia to improve traceability of timber products and secure land use rights. Indonesia faces high deforestation rates and illegal logging, requiring transparent and secure recording of land ownership and timber transactions. The blockchain technology aims to enable financing of conservation projects through improved traceability and stakeholder involvement.

Description
Blockchain-based timber supply chain traceability addresses one of the biggest environmental issues: illegal logging accounts for 15-30% of global timber trade and is linked to tropical deforestation and human rights violations.
The problem: paper-based FSC certificates can be forged; timber from illegal logging is often mixed with legal timber. Blockchain solution: the forestry operation records each tree with GPS, felling time and licence ID on-chain; the sawmill confirms timber receipt; each further processing and trading stage adds its documentation; the furniture manufacturer can immediately verify the complete chain. FSC Trace: 173 million ha of certified forests as a base database. TimberChain and other platforms implement blockchain-secured timber traceability. EU EUDR (Deforestation Regulation, from 30 December 2026): all EU importers of timber, soy, cocoa, coffee, beef, palm oil must ensure their products were not produced on deforested land — with GPS-verified proof. Blockchain is the natural infrastructure for this evidence.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
Timber trading companies and furniture manufacturers can ensure EU EUDR compliance from December 2026 with blockchain-secured proof of origin — GPS-verified source, seamless supply chain, instantly verifiable.
