# Vodafone Blockchain for Roaming and Data Management

> The reconciliation of roaming data between telecommunications providers is time-consuming and error-prone. Vodafone uses a blockchain platform to reconcile roaming data in real-time, increase transparency and reduce disputes. This solution aims to automate and accelerate the complex billing processes between different network operators.

## Description

Blockchain-based roaming data management is the technical infrastructure for blockchain-secured roaming billing between mobile networks.

Roaming coordination between networks: When a telecom user surfs abroad, home and visited network operators must exchange technical parameters (data events, timestamps, volumes). These data currently reside in different systems and are synchronised periodically — with potential for errors. Blockchain data platform: Each data event is immediately stored on-chain; both networks see the same immutable entry; discrepancies are instantly visible. GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) coordinates standardisation efforts for blockchain roaming. The Deutsche Telekom-Orange-Telefonica pilot documented in 2019 that technical implementation is feasible.

## Benefits

- Significant cost savings through automation and reduction of manual billing processes.
- Automation of complex billing processes between different network operators.
- Increased transparency and traceability of all roaming transactions for all parties involved.
- Reduction of disputes and errors through a shared, immutable data foundation.
- Less time-consuming manual tasks and more focus on value-adding strategic activities.

## Challenges

- Coordination and consensus-building between competing telecommunications companies for common technical standards.
- Need for standardisation and harmonisation of data formats between different network operators worldwide.
- Complex integration into existing legacy systems and billing platforms of telecommunications providers.
- Requirement for extensive training of employees in handling blockchain technology and new automated processes.

## Technology foundation

Blockchain technology is suitable for this use case because it enables an immutable and transparent record of all roaming transactions between different network operators. Due to its decentralised structure, all parties involved can simultaneously access the same verified data without a central authority acting as an intermediary.
