# Blockchain-based Food Supply Chain Traceability

> Walmart and Carrefour use blockchain technology to dramatically improve food traceability and enable rapid response to contamination incidents. Walmart reduced tracing time for mangoes from 7 days to 2.2 seconds while cutting product recall costs by up to 80 percent. This solution is based on IBM Food Trust and Hyperledger Fabric, achieving complete transparency from production to sale.

## Description

Walmart launched its first blockchain pilots in 2016 with IBM and Tsinghua University in China (pork traceability). In 2018, the US pilot project with IBM Food Trust for mangoes followed. The result became one of the most cited blockchain successes worldwide: traceability time reduced from 6 days, 18 hours and 26 minutes to 2.2 seconds.

The starting point: When Frank Yiannas (then Walmart VP Food Safety) launched a mango traceability experiment in 2017, it took 6 days, 18 hours and 26 minutes to trace a mango back to its source. The problem with food recalls is not only speed but precision: without accurate traceability, often the entire product category must be removed from the shelves — including unaffected goods. IBM Food Trust (Hyperledger Fabric) solves this: each mango is marked with a unique ID; every transfer is blockchain-documented; a query immediately shows the exact origin. From September 2019, Walmart made participation in IBM Food Trust mandatory for all suppliers of leafy vegetables and fresh greens. IBM Food Trust network: 300+ partners including Carrefour, Nestlé, Dole, Golden State Foods, McCormick. The German Food Association documented the Walmart model as best practice for Germany. Cost of a food recall: on average 10 million USD direct costs, plus reputational damage.

## Benefits

- Drastic reduction of liability risks through fast and precise problem identification in the supply chain.
- Traceability time shortened from days or weeks to a few seconds.
- Recall costs reduced by up to 80 percent through precise identification of affected batches.
- Complete transparency of the supply chain builds trust among partners and customers.
- Employees gain access to real-time data that significantly accelerates decision-making and problem-solving.

## Challenges

- Smaller suppliers need to be convinced and supported with technical integration.
- Integration of all supply chain partners requires comprehensive standardisation and training.
- High initial investments in IT infrastructure and blockchain technology are necessary.
- Extensive training is required to qualify employees in handling the new technology.

## Technology foundation

The solution is based on Hyperledger Fabric, a private blockchain technology specifically developed for enterprise networks. IBM Food Trust provides the cloud-based platform that enables every step of the supply chain to be immutably documented and retrieved within seconds.
