Manage renewable certificates and grid assets decentrally

Sector: Secondary sector · Industry: Energy utilities · Organisation: Energy Web Foundation · Maturity level: Production

The Energy Web Foundation launched the Energy Web Chain as an enterprise-grade blockchain infrastructure for utility companies and grid operators. The open-source platform facilitates the unique identification of distributed energy resources and enables the tamper-proof issuance of renewable energy certificates. Through standardized smart contracts and decentralized interfaces, energy assets can be integrated into grid-relevant business processes regardless of manufacturer.

Documentation status

Description

The Energy Web Foundation has developed an open-source blockchain infrastructure specifically tailored to the requirements of energy suppliers and grid operators. Conventional systems for issuing green electricity certificates often suffer from fragmented data sources and high bureaucratic verification efforts. Through the decentralized network, industrial companies and suppliers can securely prove the origin of renewable electricity and manage decentralized energy installations.

The ecosystem initiated by the Energy Web Foundation addresses the increasing decentralisation of electricity generation through wind power, photovoltaics, and home storage. Through the Energy Web Chain, physical installations receive a cryptographically secured identity, allowing every fed-in kilowatt hour to be directly recorded and verified. Smart Contracts enable the automated creation of Renewable Energy Certificates, providing market participants such as PJM-EIS with new tools for market coordination. The architecture combines standardised settlements with the scalability of industrial power grids and supports developers in building compatible trading applications. The system serves suppliers worldwide as a neutral platform to reduce integration risks in the digitalisation of grid infrastructure.

Perspectives

B2B — organisations perspective

For energy suppliers and grid operators, the technology serves as a common interface for cross-company data exchange. Certificates and balancing group data can be exchanged transparently, significantly reducing interface costs between different market participants.

B2C — consumers perspective

End customers and prosumers have the opportunity to have their fed-in green electricity certified in a tamper-proof manner. This enhances transparency about local generation sources and simplifies proof of the actual contribution to the energy transition.

Employees perspective

Employees in trading and regulatory departments benefit from automated reconciliation processes for guarantees of origin. The elimination of manual list checks reduces transmission errors and facilitates timely compliance with regulatory reporting obligations.

Technology foundation

The solution is based on the Energy Web Chain, a blockchain architecture built on Substrate and Polkadot with Solidity-compatible Smart Contracts. This architecture offers high transaction speed with low energy consumption and is specifically suited to the industrial requirements of grid operators.

Implementation examples

Energy Web Chain for guarantees of origin and grid infrastructure

Conventional certification processes for renewable energy are often fragmented, time-consuming and prone to errors or double sales.

The Energy Web Foundation has built a public, enterprise-grade blockchain infrastructure to digitise guarantees of origin for renewable energy and grid assets.

The Energy Web Foundation launched the platform to provide a standardised digital foundation for utilities and distributed resource operators. In practical trials such as with PJM Environmental Information Services (PJM-EIS), the Energy Web Origin module was used to automatically generate renewable energy certificates. By linking decentralised asset identities with blockchain transactions, grid assets and electricity volumes can be auditable and assigned.

The fragmentation of various producer data was overcome by a unified open-source network that provides trusted data for regulatory audits.
