Seamless Biogas Quality Tracking
Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Energy utilities · Organisation: Erdgas Südwest (ESW) · Maturity level: Pilot
Erdgas Südwest (ESW) demonstrated in a proof of concept how blockchain technology can be used to track biogas quality from the biogas plant to the combined heat and power unit. The entire delivery chain is thereby documented transparently and tamper-proof. The solution uses blockchain to securely map and verify biogas quality in real time.

Description
Erdgas Südwest (ESW) has investigated in a Proof of Concept how blockchain technology can be used to document the quality of biogas seamlessly and tamper-proof from the production plant to the combined heat and power plant. The blockchain enables all relevant quality data to be recorded immutably at every point along the supply chain, so that all parties can access reliable information at any time. This approach creates a new foundation for trust and transparency in the biogas supply chain without the need for a central control authority.
Biogas is increasingly used as a renewable energy source in the German energy supply, with the quality of the gas – especially the methane content and purity – being crucial for efficient power generation in combined heat and power plants (CHP). Erdgas Südwest (ESW), a regional energy supplier from southern Germany, has tested in a Proof of Concept how blockchain technology can help transparently and tamper-proof document these quality data along the entire supply chain. The blockchain acts as a decentralized, immutable register in which quality measurements are recorded at various points in the supply chain – from the biogas plant through the gas network to the CHP. This makes it comprehensible for all parties involved – producers, network operators and consumers – what gas quality was present at which point and at what time. The project demonstrates the potential of blockchain technology for the energy industry but does not provide publicly verifiable information regarding specific figures, technical details or the further project status.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
For companies in energy supply and the biogas sector, blockchain-based quality tracking offers the possibility to document supply contracts and quality assurances automatically and tamper-proof. This simplifies billing between producers, network operators and consumers and creates a reliable basis for quality certificates and regulatory evidence.
Employees perspective
Employees in quality assurance and the operation of biogas plants or networks benefit from automated documentation processes that reduce manual records and inspection steps. At the same time, new digital skills are required to operate, monitor and further develop blockchain systems.
Benefits
General
- Tamper-proof and seamless documentation of biogas quality along the entire supply chain.
- Increased transparency and trust among all parties in the biogas supply chain.
- Potential to simplify regulatory verification processes and quality certifications.
B2B — organisations
- Automated and audit-proof quality evidence for contractual partners and regulatory authorities.
- Basis for new quality-based business models and billing procedures in the biogas market.
Employees
- Relief from manual documentation and inspection tasks through automated blockchain processes.
- Clearer data basis for well-founded operational decisions.
Challenges
General
- Integration of blockchain infrastructure with existing measurement technology and network management systems.
- Lack of uniform standards for blockchain-based quality evidence in the energy sector.
- Scaling the Proof of Concept approach to broad productive use.
B2B — organisations
- Coordination and agreement of all supply chain partners on common data standards and access rights.
- Unresolved legal recognition of blockchain-based quality evidence by regulatory authorities.
Employees
- Need to qualify employees in handling new blockchain-based systems.
Technology foundation
The use case is based on blockchain technology, which is particularly suitable for tamper-proof and transparent documentation of quality data along a supply chain. Due to the decentralized and immutable nature of a blockchain ledger, quality evidence for biogas can be recorded seamlessly from the production plant to the point of consumption without requiring a central trusted authority. Which specific blockchain platform (e.g. Hyperledger, Ethereum or a proprietary solution) was used cannot be verified from the available sources.
Implementation examples
Proof of Concept: Blockchain-based Biogas Quality Tracking
There is a significant need in the biogas market for reliable and tamper-proof quality verification, as gas quality is crucial both for technical efficiency and regulatory requirements. Existing documentation processes are often manual and prone to errors or manipulation.
Erdgas Südwest (ESW) tested in a proof of concept how the quality of biogas can be transparently and tamper-proof documented using blockchain technology from the producer to the combined heat and power plant. The project demonstrates the potential of distributed ledger technologies for quality tracking in the biogas supply chain.
As part of the proof of concept, Erdgas Südwest (ESW) examined the use of blockchain technology for seamless documentation of biogas quality along the entire supply chain from the biogas plant to the combined heat and power plant. The blockchain enables quality data to be stored immutably and transparently for all parties involved, without the need for a central controlling authority. The project exemplifies the growing interest of the German energy industry in blockchain applications to increase transparency and data security in the supply chain. Specific technical details about the blockchain platform used, partners, or measurable results are not verifiable from publicly available sources.
The project addresses the challenge of proving biogas quality transparently, fraud-proof and in real time along a multi-stage supply chain without relying on a central trusted authority.
