Enjin Blockchain Gaming Platform

Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Gaming and esports · Organisation: Enjin · Maturity level: Production

Enjin provides a blockchain platform that enables game developers to seamlessly integrate NFTs and digital assets into their games. The platform originally operated on Ethereum using the ERC-1155 standard and later migrated to its own Enjin Blockchain for better scalability. Since its testnet launch in March 2019, the platform has been live and allows developers to create cross-game NFT rewards and gaming multiverses.

Description

Enjin was founded in 2009 as a gaming community platform. From 2017, the team developed the ENJ token and the ERC-1155 multi-token standard on Ethereum. ERC-1155 is the most efficient token standard: one contract can manage any number of token types — fungible (currencies) and non-fungible (items) simultaneously. The ENJ token serves as backing: each Enjin NFT contains minted ENJ as a real value anchor.

The core problem with gaming ownership rights: game developers centrally control all items — if the game is shut down, items become worthless. Enjin solves this through blockchain NFTs: items exist independently of the game server. ENJ tokens are "locked" when minting items: an Enjin NFT is ENJ token-backed and therefore always has real value (melting). Several thousand games integrate Enjin. Most notable partnerships: Microsoft Azure Heroes (NFT badges for Microsoft developer milestones), Samsung Galaxy S10 (Enjin Wallet as the default crypto wallet, the world's first hardware wallet integration in a mass-market smartphone). ERC-1155 was ratified in 2019 as an official Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP-1155) — Enjin co-founder Witek Radomski is the main author of the standard. Today, ERC-1155 is used by OpenSea, Polygon, Solana and practically all Web3 gaming platforms. In 2023, Enjin launched its own blockchain platform "Enjin Blockchain" (Polkadot-based).

Perspectives

B2B — organisations perspective

Game developers can implement gaming items as NFTs using the Enjin SDK without their own blockchain infrastructure. Items have real value through ENJ backing and can be used across games — new customer loyalty models.

B2C — consumers perspective

Players truly own their items: Enjin NFTs can be sold, traded or transferred to other games independently of the game developer — the end of platform lock-in for gaming items.

Employees perspective

Developers need to familiarise themselves with new blockchain concepts but at the same time gain access to innovative tools and SDKs that simplify implementation. Marketing teams can develop new campaign formats with NFT rewards and cross-platform assets.

Technology foundation

Enjin uses its own blockchain infrastructure, originally built on Ethereum with the ERC-1155 standard and later migrated to its own Enjin Blockchain. This technology enables the management of different types of digital assets within a single smart contract and their transfer between different games.

Implementation examples

Essence of the Elements Seasons

Enjin wanted to demonstrate the concept of a gaming multiverse and show how NFTs can increase player engagement across multiple platforms. The goal was to showcase to developers and players the benefits of cross-platform digital assets.

Enjin launched a cross-platform gaming campaign with NFT rewards that can be used in multiple games.

The 'Essence of the Elements Seasons' is an ongoing campaign planned for 2026 that offers cross-platform NFT rewards. The campaign includes various seasons featuring the elements Water, Wind, and Earth, where players can collect NFTs that can be used in different games within the Enjin ecosystem. This demonstrates the concept of a gaming multiverse, where digital assets are transferable between different game titles.

The campaign addresses the problem of isolated gaming ecosystems by enabling players to use their digital assets across different games. It also demonstrates how NFT-based reward systems can promote long-term player engagement.
