The Sandbox - Blockchain-based Gaming Platform
Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Gaming and esports · Organisation: Pixowl (Animoca Brands) · Maturity level: Production
The Sandbox is a blockchain-based gaming platform that uses NFTs for tradeable in-game assets and enables players to create and monetize their own worlds. The platform addresses the lack of interoperability between games through decentralized NFTs and an open marketplace. The original game achieved 40 million downloads and 1 million monthly active users with 57 million user-generated worlds before blockchain integration.

Description
The Sandbox is an Ethereum-based metaverse platform, originally developed by Pixowl (2012) as a mobile game, acquired in 2018 for 5 million USD by Animoca Brands and transformed into a blockchain platform. The core concept: users buy LAND (NFT plots), create content with VoxEdit (voxel assets) and Game Maker (game logic without code), and can market these.
The Sandbox has 166,464 LAND parcels — a fixed total creating scarcity. SAND is the ERC-20 token for transactions and governance. Notable LAND owners include Snoop Dogg (own virtual "Snoopverse"), Atari (own casino district), The Walking Dead, Smurfs, Adidas, Ubisoft, Gucci. A LAND package directly next to Snoop Dogg’s metaverse plot was purchased during the peak phase for 450,000 USD. Animoca Brands, the parent company, is one of the most influential Web3 companies: over 400 portfolio companies, investor in Axie Infinity, OpenSea and dozens of other projects. The Sandbox enables a true creator economy: users who create assets can sell them on the Sandbox marketplace; game creators can rent LAND or operate games with entry fees. Total land market revenue: over 350 million USD. 65,000+ user-created assets. Over 5,000 brand partnerships.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
Brands can create virtual experience spaces in The Sandbox: events, exhibitions, games — with true ownership rights of the LAND NFT and direct community interaction within the Web3 target audience.
B2C — consumers perspective
Users can actively participate in the Sandbox economy through creation (creating and selling assets), gaming (playing games, earning tokens), and speculation (buying and performing with LAND) — all with true digital ownership rights.
Employees perspective
Employees in the gaming industry need to become familiar with blockchain technology and NFT development. Content creators gain new tools for direct monetisation of their creative work.
Benefits
General
- Players receive true ownership of digital assets that are transferable across different platforms.

Challenges
General
- Implementation requires significant technical expertise in blockchain technology and smart contract development.
- The volatility of cryptocurrencies can affect monetisation strategies.
B2B — organisations
- Companies must invest in new technologies and skills to utilise blockchain-based gaming platforms.
B2C — consumers
- End customers need to become familiar with blockchain wallets and cryptocurrencies to fully use the platform.
Employees
- Employees must continuously update their skills to keep pace with rapidly evolving blockchain technology.
Technology foundation
The Sandbox uses the Ethereum blockchain for ERC20 SAND tokens and NFTs to represent in-game assets and virtual land. This technology enables true ownership of digital items that can be transferred between different games and platforms.
Implementation examples
Animoca Brands acquisition and blockchain integration
Animoca Brands recognised the potential to expand the existing successful game with blockchain technology and create new monetisation opportunities. The acquisition was intended to strengthen the company's position in the emerging blockchain gaming market.
Animoca Brands acquired Pixowl for 4.875 million USD and transformed The Sandbox into a blockchain gaming platform.
In August 2018, Animoca Brands acquired the game developer Pixowl for 4.875 million USD, consisting of 520,000 USD in cash and the remainder in shares. The company additionally invested 2.5 million USD in developing the blockchain version of the platform. The integration of Ethereum-based NFTs and SAND tokens enabled the transformation of the already successful mobile game with 40 million downloads into an innovative Metaverse platform.
The integration solved the problem of lack of interoperability between games and created true digital ownership for players. Blockchain technology enabled the large existing user base to be transitioned into a sustainable play-to-earn ecosystem.
