Documentation status

Description

KPMG Australia developed a blockchain-based product provenance platform as part of its innovation activities and spun it off into an independent startup, OriginsNext, in 2021. The transition from an internal consulting solution to an independent product startup demonstrates the commercial potential KPMG saw in the platform.

OriginsNext addresses one of the most pressing compliance areas in the coming years: companies are required by the EU (EUDR, CSRD) and other regulators to provide seamless proof of origin for their products and raw materials. OriginsNext offers a blockchain-based platform for this: suppliers register products and batches with origin information; every transaction (processing, transport, trade) is blockchain-documented; end recipients can access the complete provenance chain in real time. The KPMG DNA is evident in the platform architecture: audit-grade documentation, regulatory compliance, and governance mechanisms are built in. Australian focus: agricultural and raw material supply chains (wool, beef, seafood) where Australia is a global export champion and provenance proofs are commercially valuable. OriginsNext published the press release about the spin-off on originsNext.com.

Perspectives

B2B — organisations perspective

Companies with complex global supply chains can build audit-grade blockchain-secured provenance proofs with OriginsNext — directly aligned with EU EUDR and CSRD requirements.

B2C — consumers perspective

End consumers can use the platform to trace where their products come from and under what conditions they were produced. This strengthens trust in the purchased goods and enables more conscious purchasing decisions based on verified sustainability and quality proofs.

Employees perspective

Employees gain access to transparent, verified data across the entire supply chain through the platform, improving their decision-making. Automation of documentation processes relieves staff from manual tasks and enables them to focus on strategic analyses.

Technology foundation

The platform is based on blockchain technology, which acts as an immutable digital ledger transparently documenting all transactions and data changes in the supply chain. Additionally, IoT sensors are used for automatic data collection and modern analytical tools for evaluating the gathered information.

Implementation examples

KPMG Origins spin-off to OriginsNext

KPMG Australia recognised the growing demand for transparency and traceability in supply chains and wanted to develop an innovative solution for complex compliance challenges. KPMG Australia developed a blockchain-based supply chain platform and successfully spun it off as an independent start-up, OriginsNext.

KPMG Australia developed KPMG Origins as a blockchain-based track-and-trace platform for supply chain compliance and successfully deployed it in the construction, agriculture, and waste management sectors. After successful market launch and implementation, the platform was spun off as an independent start-up, OriginsNext. The new company is led by CEO Laszlo Peter, a former KPMG partner and ASPAC Head of Blockchain, and plans market expansion both in Australia and internationally.

The platform resolved operational risks in complex supply chains and provided a solution for challenges related to data reconciliation and security concerns. Through independent verification and certification of data, trust between supply chain participants was strengthened.
