Traceable Component Compliance in Automotive Supply Chains
Sector: Secondary sector · Industry: Automotive industry · Organisation: Renault in Zusammenarbeit mit IBM und RCS Global · Maturity level: Production
Renault developed the blockchain platform XCEED together with IBM and a consortium of automotive suppliers to enable full traceability of components and compliance certification across the supply chain. Built on Hyperledger Fabric, the solution allows material and certification data to be recorded immutably and made transparently accessible to all involved partners. Time-consuming manual audit processes are significantly reduced as a result.

Description
XCEED is a blockchain platform developed by Renault together with IBM and a consortium of automotive suppliers to provide seamless proof of compliance with quality and material regulations in vehicle production. Each participating supplier can upload their certificates and material data to the platform, where they are stored immutably and immediately accessible to authorised partners. This eliminates much of the previously necessary, weeks-long manual audit processes, and deviations can be promptly reported to the relevant parties.
The automotive industry is subject to strict regulatory requirements for proof of component and material conformity – from raw material origin to installation in the vehicle. Renault began addressing this issue with its own blockchain solution called XCEED, developed in collaboration with IBM based on Hyperledger Fabric. In an initial pilot at the Renault plant in Douai, over one million documents were archived, with a processing capacity of 500 transactions per second. After the successful pilot, Renault and its partners signed a partnership agreement in April 2021 to roll out the platform to further production sites in France, Turkey, and Spain. XCEED is now designed as an open platform accessible to global OEMs and suppliers of all sizes and was recognised by Forbes magazine as one of the best blockchain projects in the automotive sector. The hybrid cloud architecture allows each consortium member to use their preferred cloud provider, significantly lowering acceptance barriers for new participants.
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
For car manufacturers and their suppliers, XCEED offers a central, tamper-proof proof of all compliance-relevant component and material data, which can be presented to authorities, customers, and business partners at any time. Irregularities can be reported immediately to the affected subcontractors, significantly shortening time-consuming and costly audit cycles and increasing the efficiency of the entire quality management.
Employees perspective
Employees in quality assurance and compliance management benefit from having relevant certificates and proofs available at the push of a button, instead of having to manually search through various systems. However, shifting routine tasks to analytical ones requires building new digital skills in handling the platform.
Benefits
General
- Seamless, tamper-proof documentation of component and material certificates across all stages of the supply chain.
- Significant reduction of time and costs by avoiding weeks-long manual audit processes.
- Rapid identification and reporting of deviations to affected suppliers in real time.
- Scalable, open platform accessible to OEMs and suppliers of all sizes.
B2B — organisations
- Strengthening the trust basis with authorities and business partners through audit-proof compliance evidence.
- Efficiency gains in quality management through automated information flow between all supply chain partners.
- Competitive advantage through early positioning on an industry-wide recognised compliance platform.
Employees
- Relief from time-consuming manual document and audit processes in favour of analytical tasks.
- Transparent access to all relevant certification data without complicated communication channels.
Challenges
General
- Involving a wide range of suppliers of different sizes and digital maturity requires significant coordination and training effort.
- The technical integration of the blockchain platform with existing ERP and document management systems is complex and resource-intensive.
- Legal and data protection issues in cross-border exchange of sensitive supply chain data must be carefully clarified.
B2B — organisations
- Smaller suppliers may be overwhelmed by the initial implementation effort and require targeted support in connecting to the platform.
- Acceptance by all supply chain partners for a shared, disclosed data basis is not a given and must be actively promoted.
Employees
- Employees need to develop new digital skills to use the platform effectively.
- Changes in established work processes may meet resistance and require accompanying change management.
Technology foundation
XCEED is based on Hyperledger Fabric, an open-source blockchain protocol from the Linux Foundation, specifically designed for enterprise-wide applications with defined participant circles. This permissioned blockchain is particularly suitable for supply chain scenarios, as only authorised actors are allowed to read and write data, ensuring both data protection and data integrity. The platform runs in a hybrid cloud architecture with multiple cloud providers – including IBM Cloud – allowing each participant to use the cloud platform of their choice.
Implementation examples
XCEED – Blockchain Platform for Component Compliance at Renault
The automotive industry faces steadily increasing regulatory requirements for proof of component and material compliance, which have so far been met through elaborate, manual audit processes. Renault sought a solution to make these processes more efficient, transparent and tamper-proof while facilitating collaboration with a wide range of international suppliers.
Renault developed the blockchain platform XCEED together with IBM and a consortium of suppliers – including Faurecia, Knauf Industries, Simoldes and Coşkunöz – to immutably record compliance certificates and material data along the vehicle supply chain and make them transparently accessible. After a successful pilot at the Douai plant, the platform was opened in 2021 for industrial rollout to further sites and global OEMs.
As part of the XCEED project, Renault piloted a blockchain solution based on Hyperledger Fabric initially at its Douai plant in France, where over one million documents were archived and processed with a transaction performance of 500 units per second. The platform enables all involved suppliers to directly store certificates and material proofs on the blockchain, making them immediately and tamper-proof accessible to authorised partners. In April 2021, Renault and its consortium partners signed a partnership agreement to expand the platform to production sites in Douai (France), Bursa (Turkey) and Palencia (Spain). XCEED operates in a hybrid cloud architecture with multiple cloud providers, allowing each participant to use their preferred cloud infrastructure. The platform was recognised by Forbes magazine as one of the best blockchain projects in the automotive sector and is now open to global OEMs and suppliers of all sizes.
Before the introduction of XCEED, compliance proofs across many stages of the supply chain were fragmented and had to be compiled through time-consuming, weeks-long audits. Deviations at sub-suppliers could not be communicated promptly, leading to delays and increased quality risks.
