Mini-Blockchain Network with Raspberry Pi

Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Information technology · Organisation: Blockchain Reallabor · Maturity level: Pilot

The Mini-Blockchain Network demonstrates an energy-efficient blockchain solution based on seven interconnected Raspberry Pi computers. Stored information is automatically synchronized between all devices, making data manipulation more difficult and increasing security through decentralized storage. The system shows how cost-effective hardware can be used for blockchain applications and offers a practical alternative to energy-intensive traditional blockchain networks.

Description

The Mini-Blockchain Network Demonstrator at the Blockchain Reallabor Hürth (Fraunhofer FIT) is a unique learning demonstrator: several physical computers/nodes are visibly connected by cables, forming a scaled-down but fully functional blockchain network.

The fundamental problem with blockchain explanations: abstract concepts such as distributed ledger, consensus, and immutable chains are difficult to convey. Visual explanations help, but nothing convinces as much as direct experience. The Mini-Blockchain Network Demonstrator makes this possible: visitors can enter a transaction themselves; they see how it propagates through all nodes; they can try live to alter a past transaction — and observe how the network rejects the manipulation. The Blockchain Reallabor uses this demonstrator for tours, workshops, and company visits. The system is completely live: no simulation, no pre-recording — real blockchain transactions in real time. The demonstrator also serves as a didactic tool for technical companies wishing to teach blockchain basics to non-technical staff. The Blockchain Reallabor portfolio lists the Mini-Blockchain Network as one of the core demonstrators in the euronova CAMPUS Studio 6.

Perspectives

B2B — organisations perspective

Companies can raise awareness of blockchain among their executives and non-technical staff within hours using the Mini-Blockchain Network Demonstrator at the Blockchain Reallabor — experiential learning instead of slide presentations.

Employees perspective

IT staff gain a practical learning platform through the Mini-Blockchain Network to understand and test blockchain technology hands-on. The system allows developers and system administrators to gain experience with decentralized systems without having to build complex and expensive infrastructures.

Technology foundation

The system uses a permissioned blockchain technology specifically optimised for operation on resource-constrained hardware such as Raspberry Pi computers. This blockchain variant enables the operation of a secure decentralised network with low energy consumption, as only authorised participants can conduct transactions and no energy-intensive mining processes are required.

Implementation examples

Mini-Blockchain Demonstration at the Blockchain Reallabor

The Reallabor wanted to demonstrate that blockchain technology does not necessarily have to be energy-intensive and costly. The aim was to show a practical alternative that is also accessible to smaller organisations.

The Blockchain Reallabor has developed a functional Mini-Blockchain Network of seven Raspberry Pi computers and presents it as a demonstration platform.

The Blockchain Reallabor developed a Mini-Blockchain Network as a practical demonstration of energy-efficient blockchain technology. The system consists of seven networked Raspberry Pi computers operating a permissioned blockchain. Stored data is automatically synchronised across all devices, making manipulation difficult. The solution serves as a proof-of-concept for cost-effective and sustainable blockchain implementations.

The challenges of high energy costs and complex hardware requirements of traditional blockchain systems were solved by using energy-efficient Raspberry Pi computers. At the same time, the technology was made accessible for educational and demonstration purposes.
