Mobile Blockchain Demo for Real-time Information
Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Information technology · Organisation: Blockchain Reallabor · Maturity level: Concept
A mobile application allows users to share real-time information such as traffic accidents or other local events. Other app users can confirm or dispute these reports, creating a decentralized verification process. When sufficient confirmation is received from the community, the verified event is documented on the blockchain to reduce the spread of false information.

Description
The Blockchain Reallabor in Hürth (euronova CAMPUS Studio 6) developed a smartphone app for directly experiencing blockchain technology. Visitors and company representatives can carry out blockchain-based transactions themselves during tours and workshops — without technical knowledge, using simple smartphone interactions.
The Blockchain Reallabor follows a practical educational approach: instead of explaining blockchain abstractly, the researchers let visitors experience the technology directly. Via smartphone app, participants can: (1) receive and issue digital certificates (SSI demos). (2) carry out and track token transactions (e.g. CO2 tokens). (3) participate in Industry 4.0 demos where machines write production data to the blockchain. The Reallabor is located on the euronova CAMPUS in Hürth (near Cologne), right next to the AI Village. All demonstrators are live and in production — not a showroom, but real blockchain infrastructure. The WZL (Machine Tool Laboratory) of RWTH Aachen is also a partner within the Blockchain Reallabor in the Rhenish mining area. Prof. Wolfgang Prinz (Head, RWTH Aachen + Fraunhofer FIT) relies on direct experience as the key to blockchain adoption: "We educate, advise, analyse the use case and determine the need."
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
SMEs and company representatives from the Rhenish mining area can experience for free at the Blockchain Reallabor how blockchain technology can be used in their specific industry — and develop pilot projects together with the Fraunhofer team.
B2C — consumers perspective
End consumers would benefit from verified, trustworthy local information while actively contributing to the quality of information. The app would enable them to be both consumers and producers of information.
Employees perspective
Employees would act as users of the app and contribute to community-based verification of information. For companies in the media or information sector, the way of working could shift from reactive to a more proactive, community-supported information gathering.
Benefits
General
- Decentralised verification of information can increase trust in local news and event reports.
- The immutable storage on the blockchain reduces manipulated or falsified information.
- Community-based verification can be faster and more cost-effective than traditional journalistic verification processes.
B2B — organisations
- Companies can create trustworthy sources of information for their customers and thereby strengthen their credibility.
Employees
- Employees can actively contribute to the quality of the information landscape and develop a better understanding of information verification.
Challenges
General
- Achieving a critical mass of active users is a key challenge for the success of the system.
- Ensuring the quality of community verifications without a central control instance remains problematic.
B2B — organisations
- Companies must invest in the development and maintenance of the technical infrastructure without guaranteed profitability.
Employees
- Employees need training on how to use blockchain-based verification systems and must be motivated to participate actively.
Technology foundation
The application uses blockchain technology for the immutable storage of verified event reports. Due to the decentralised structure of the blockchain, information cannot be manipulated afterwards, ensuring the credibility of the stored events.
