Description

Nike built Nikeland on Roblox as a virtual brand world: users can wear Nike avatar clothing, participate in mini-games, and experience the Nike product world. In December 2021, Nike acquired the NFT startup RTFKT, known for its virtual sneakers. CryptoKicks is Nike's concept for physical-digital sneaker pairs: when purchasing a real Nike shoe, the buyer also receives an NFT as a digital twin.

Nike's metaverse strategy was the most comprehensive of any Fortune 500 company: Nikeland on Roblox (November 2021) attracted nearly 7 million visitors in the first months. The virtual Nike building reflects the real headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. Users can play with friends and receive digital Nike items for their Roblox avatars. In parallel: RTFKT acquisition (December 2021), whose NFT sneaker drops sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. With the Swoosh platform launch (November 2022), Nike built its own Web3 community platform for Nike NFTs. In 2022/23, Nike generated over 185 million USD in revenue from NFT sales. However, in June 2024, Nike shut down RTFKT and ended most NFT activities. Lessons: Metaverse branding creates brand relevance with the gaming generation; long-term value depends on real utility of the NFTs.

Technology foundation

Nike Nikeland is primarily based on the Roblox platform and its own technology infrastructure, not directly on blockchain technology. Separate blockchain initiatives such as the acquisition of RTFKT for NFTs are handled via other Nike channels like the Virtual Studio.
