Blockchain for Learning Progress - LearnTrack
Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Continuing education and e-learning · Organisation: Republik Malta (Ministry for Education and Employment) mit Learning Machine; University of Nicosia · Maturity level: Concept
LearnTrack is developing a blockchain-based solution for decentralized and secure recording of learning progress in continuing education. The technology aims to replace the often confusing and error-prone tracking of learning progress with transparent, tamper-proof documentation. The project is in development phase and promises improved educational planning through precise learning progress analytics.

Description
Blockchain-secured learning progress makes continuing education visible and verifiable — as an alternative to traditional certificates, especially for lifelong learners.
The problem: Traditional certificates only reflect the final qualification, not the learning path. Someone who earned an MBA in 1999 has learned a lot since then — but this is not documented. Blockchain learning history: Every completed unit, every exam and every demonstration of competence is blockchain timestamped; the collection of all proofs forms a verifiable learning biography. EU Micro-Credentials Recommendation (2022): The EU recommends standardised, recognisable micro-credentials for lifelong learning — EBSI as a technical backbone option. LinkedIn Learning and Coursera are experimenting with Verifiable Credentials. Particularly relevant for: career changers (documented learning path into a new field), upskilling programmes (companies can document employee training on blockchain), international recognition (EU-wide compatibility through EBSI standards).
Perspectives
B2B — organisations perspective
Training providers and companies can document employee upskilling with blockchain-secured proof of learning progress — granular competence profiles instead of certificates, instantly verifiable and EBSI-compatible.
B2C — consumers perspective
Individual learners can independently document their educational progress and provide tamper-proof proof when needed. The portability of blockchain-based certificates facilitates switching between different education providers.
Employees perspective
Employees receive a complete, portable record of their learning progress that they can use independently of their employer. The transparent recording of their qualifications strengthens their position in promotions and job changes.
Benefits
General
- Tamper-proof documentation of learning progress creates trust among all participants in the education process.
- Automated validation processes significantly reduce administrative effort and minimise human errors.
- The decentralised architecture enables secure data distribution without central vulnerabilities.
B2B — organisations
- Companies can precisely measure and optimise their investments in employee training.
B2C — consumers
- Private learners can transparently and credibly prove their qualifications at any time.
Employees
- Employees gain full control over their educational data and can use it throughout their lives.
Challenges
General
- The high technical complexity requires specialised blockchain developers and extensive user training.
- Data protection concerns and resistance to new technologies can hinder acceptance among educational institutions.
B2B — organisations
- Integration with existing HR systems and learning platforms can be technically complex and costly.
B2C — consumers
- Private users require technical understanding to securely manage their blockchain-based educational data.
Employees
- Employees must develop new digital skills to effectively use the blockchain system.
Technology foundation
The system uses a permissioned blockchain, where only authorised educational institutions and learning platforms have access to ensure data protection. Smart contracts automatically validate learning progress and ensure that all entries are immutably and transparently documented.
