Decentralized Learning Platform with Blockchain

Sector: Tertiary sector · Industry: Continuing education and e-learning · Organisation: University of Mauritius · Maturity level: Concept

A conceptual blockchain-based approach for a MOOC platform in vocational education that would enable tokenization of learning progress and decentralized certification. The University of Mauritius was mentioned as a potential implementing organization, but no verified data about an actual project or pilot program could be found. The concept aims to create flexible and transparent educational offerings through blockchain technology.

Documentation status

Description

Decentralised blockchain-based e-learning gives learners control over their educational data and makes course rights platform-independent.

The platform dependency problem: If Coursera or Udemy deletes a course or changes the terms of use, learners lose access to paid content. Blockchain e-learning solves this: course content is stored decentralised on IPFS; buyers receive a token representing access rights; as long as the IPFS network exists, the content is accessible. Course completion certificates as NFTs: irrevocable, valid for life, immediately verifiable. Tokenised micro-credentials: instead of whole courses, individual competence proofs can be issued as tokens. EduBlocks and similar projects demonstrate the technical feasibility.

Perspectives

B2C — consumers perspective

Learners receive self-controlled course rights and certificates through blockchain-based e-learning — platform-independent, valid for life, and immediately verifiable as proof of competence.
